Tuesday, December 24, 2013. Mostly Hazy with a Chance of Dust. Each winter Ghana experiences the Harmattan (hah-muh-tawn), which is essentially dust blowing from the Sahara desert into the Gulf of Guinea. The skies over Accra are hazy through much of December and January. According to local legend (or Michael, the driver), the Harmattan officially begins after two big rainstorms, which was true this year at least. Saturday, November 30, 2013. The African Kerns: July 2013

http://africankerns.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 30, 2013. Random Musing About My Life in Ghana. We’ve been living in Ghana for two years and four months, but who’s counting? When I was laid up, there were so few things for me to do. Even working was cumbersome with a cast. Book Club – I went to four get togethers and just never really felt like I belonged or clicked with anyone. To have something to work for. So, as I sit here feeling sorry for myself, the most important question I’m asking is “how can I make this better? Boot Camp. ...

The African Kerns: What Century Is it?

http://africankerns.blogspot.com/2013/11/what-century-is-it.html

Tuesday, November 5, 2013. What Century Is it? While I was in Colorado in October, I told my mom and dad about a funny text message I had received from Dave while I was in the U.S. in August and he was the lone ranger in Accra. The message went as follows:. More than once I have found bugs in something I was preparing to cook or eat; an occurrence that had absolutely never happened to me prior to moving to Ghana. Does anyone know where to buy nice lamps in Accra (looking for more simple designs ie: NOT m...

The African Kerns: July 2012

http://africankerns.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 22, 2012. Ghana Be Another Day. Wherever I go, I almost always have my cell phone which I use to make notes about things I’ve seen or heard in my travels around the city. Oftentimes, Michael and I will talk about Ghanaian traditions, family, and just life in general. I’m finally taking some time to transfer all of those notes into a blog! Accra), there are no other such processing plants. The vast majority of the cocoa grown throughout Ghana is exported and processed in other countries.

The African Kerns: Southern Italy? Before This....Only In My Dreams!

http://africankerns.blogspot.com/2013/11/southern-italy-before-thisonly-in-my.html

Saturday, November 30, 2013. Before This.Only In My Dreams! As so many know from my previous writings, living in Ghana has its distinct and unique challenges, especially for a couple who have never lived overseas, much less in a third-world country. Conversely, the compensation package Dave received includes things that assist us in dealing with those daily trials. The positively BEST piece of the package are the R&Rs. Since moving to Ghana we have visited:. Buckingham Palace in London. Our driver was te...

The African Kerns: September 2013

http://africankerns.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 20, 2013. Last Friday night Dave and I went to dinner with friends, and we were discussing some of the annoyances we have contended with while living in Ghana. Dave shared his “moment of truth” with us, explaining that it occurs every morning when he flushes the toilet. If the toilet tank refills, his day will begin nicely with a hot shower. If not, he’s likely taking a bottled-water spit bath. After dropping Lina off at home and working our way through the rush hour traffic, Michael sa...

A Day in the Country. Wednesday, June 6, 2012. Cleo and I were able to fly to Casper, WY last week to visit with my family. http://cleoandmarcycheney.blogspot.com/2012/04/time-flies.html

A Day in the Country. Friday, April 27, 2012. Just realized it's been a couple months since I've updated the blog! Whew, time sure flies when you're having fun, or doing lots of yardwork, or just pretty much living your life:) Cleo and I love this time of year.Braves baseball games and time to start doing yardwork and making things look all pretty for all the gawkers driving by. It's so fun to be outside and getting fresh air and exercise while actually accomplishing something. April 28, 2012 at 8:17 AM.

A Day in the Country: Milestones...

http://cleoandmarcycheney.blogspot.com/2011/07/milestones.html

A Day in the Country. Tuesday, July 19, 2011. Although they didn't have Cleos' bloodwork back before we left, he too is doing GREAT! He feels so good and his energy levels are wearing me out.LOL:) The biggest changes with this being his 6 month visit are:. He stopped the Valcyte (anti-viral medication). He stopped the Bactrim (antibiotic). He now only has to see the Transplant team every 2 months. So that's it . in a nutshell! July 21, 2011 at 10:12 AM. That is crazy that its been 6 months already!

http://cleoandmarcycheney.blogspot.com/2012/01/dont-bling.html

A Day in the Country. Sunday, January 15, 2012. Yesterday, January 14, 2012 was the one year anniversary of Cleos' successful kidney transplant.YAY! He is doing so good, feels great, looks great and all indications are that he's on the right track to a long and healthy future with a very strong kidney. He's a rock star (well, not officially but in my world he is! In the words of Kenny Chesney "In this here today, gone tomorrow world we're living in" you better do it, say it, show it and live it because y...

A Day in the Country. Monday, October 10, 2011. It's almost here Rut Day. A day that I dread every October 15th since 1996! For those of you not from the West or those who have no hunters in their family or for those of you who just really don't give a dang, October 15th (lovingly referred to as Rut Day in our home! With loads of laundry and dirty camp equipment, but the look on his face and in his eyes made it all worth while.I miss those days for him. Do I understand it? Jake and Liz Postlewait. Newnan...

A Day in the Country. Wednesday, August 1, 2012. A Day in the Country. Wednesday, November 2, 2011. The last two weekends have been jam packed with GIRL TIME! Eat and just hang out in our jammies if that's what we want to do. It was such a great time with fabulous friends and just what the Dr. ordered. I really had a great time and look forward to many more fun times with the Carlsons. Sunday, we shopped (AGAIN! Ate a really good late lunch then went to see her granddaughter b4 she went trick or treating, then back to Tammys' to watch Something Borrowed.

A Day in the Country. Wednesday, December 14, 2011. I have received many Christmas cards and pictures already this year and yet, once again, I didn't get any out! I know, I'm a slacker.I have no excuse, I just did not do it.it's just that simple. 2011 has been a challenging but really good year for the Cheney family. Let me see if I can break it down by the months.here goes:. Continued walking and started doing yardwork. Love being outside, especially before it gets really hot here in Georgia. Not such a...

Eating from the Garden. Those pickles are going to be delightful. Refrigerator pickles. Who knew this was such a simple thing? Next round to be planted soon: cucumbers, pumpkins and watermelon. The garden continues to thrive thanks to a couple of weeks of cooler weather and a bit of rain. The tomatoes are going bonkers. The beets have been roasted and pickled:. What are you growing?
