Mud & Lotus: May 2010
http://mudandlotus.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
A bit of mindfulness amid all the rest. Wednesday, May 26, 2010. Meditation 101 (Part 2). Peace Is Every Step. Is a favorite book for many people, and for good reason. The tone is caring and gentle, as if Thầy is speaking with us quietly, rather than delivering a lecture or “teaching” and he seems to be wearing a half smile (or full smile) the whole time. In this book, before he even brings up the topic of meditation, he talks about breathing. Breathing in and out is very important, and it is enjoyable.

Mud & Lotus: February 2010
http://mudandlotus.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
A bit of mindfulness amid all the rest. Friday, February 26, 2010. Friend on the Journey. I am now revising a picture book manuscript that has been in the works for several years. It will be a companion to an earlier book of mine, Polar Bear Night. In the first book, a little polar bear cub ventures out on her own and witnesses a star shower. In this book, the cub will meet another cub, and they become friends. I haven't worked on it at all. Here is a section of the notes that I keep coming back to.

Mud & Lotus: April 2010
http://mudandlotus.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
A bit of mindfulness amid all the rest. Monday, April 26, 2010. This past weekend, I joined fifteen or so sangha members on retreat at Blue Cliff Monastery. It was lovely being up there, taking in the calm and practice of the monastics, and it was lovely being there with sangha friends. The first day was sunny and beautiful. Apple trees and others were in fragrant bloom. Trees were still in their first green leaf, a few weeks behind Brooklyn in their pace through spring. Practice mindfully with it. 5 Dwe...

Mud & Lotus: Single Mind
http://mudandlotus.blogspot.com/2011/04/single-mind.html
A bit of mindfulness amid all the rest. Friday, April 1, 2011. My Chinese brush painting class is back in session. Last class, I arrived with a mind full of trouble. That is, I was troubled about something that had happened, and even more troubled by what could have happened, and by what could still happen, and by what it all reminded me of from my past. And more complex characters, such as “spring.”. In standard script, “meditation” looks like this:. Click on picture for a larger view]. It was only when...

Mud & Lotus: August 2010
http://mudandlotus.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
A bit of mindfulness amid all the rest. Sunday, August 22, 2010. Looking for good but easy songs to play on my guitar, I came across "Gone" by Jack Johnson. I remember when, according to my sister, his first album,. Was getting lots of play on Boston college radio stations, and he was this wonderful find. Like discovering Tracy Chapman before everyone else did. That was back in 2001. After that, I lost track of him. Turns out he’s become a star, spending 2010 on a world tour. This is how it starts:.

A bit of mindfulness amid all the rest. Thursday, December 31, 2009. The Dharma of Caring. I've brought this post over from my old gardening blog; I think it belongs here as well. This post isn't really about gardening, except in the sense of life, death, renewal, loss, that sort of thing. This month, an essay I wrote is appearing in a small Buddhist journal called The Mindfulness Bell. Some definitions for those who are unfamiliar with Buddhism:. Tea ceremony - in this tradition, the special format of c...
