A Geographic Ramble: Open Letter to Juan Williams

http://www.ageographicramble.blogspot.com/2010/10/open-letter-to-juan-williams.html

Thursday, October 28, 2010. Open Letter to Juan Williams. Look,  Juan. I’m not an apologist.  . But I am an American woman who chooses to wear that ‘Muslim garb’ on planes … and also at school, at work, to the grocery store, the library, the shopping mall, at the park, on the metro, in line to get lunch, or coffee, or a movie ticket. I realize that my identity-marker triggers a Pavlovian aversion among the public; conditioned by the right wing rants of  FOX and friends. 8216;first and foremost as Muslim&...

Can I Tell You Something?: May 2008

http://monapoly.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Can I Tell You Something? Friday, May 9, 2008. Life Lesson #10a: Carolina In My Mind (Freshman Year). Let me tell you something. Life Lesson #10: In my future academic, social, and general life trials, "I'll be going to Carolina in my mind. Today will be about Freshman year. Each point has a long story of its own. But for once, I will keep them concise. Coming late to my first class as an undergraduate and having to make an entire row get up for me because the only available seat was in the middle. Alien...

Aidan on an Island: June 2011

http://islaidan.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 26, 2011. I’m a sureño! I moved in temporarily with Chloe, and at the moment, an evangelical church has set up massive speakers and about a hundred chairs (a bit hopeful…) two houses down, and everything is vibrating.  If they turned it down just a bit, you could hear something besides a billion decibels of static (screaming is…better? I started teaching basic computer classes in the batey! This is pretty much how my day went:. Here are some pictures from the last week:. The view from my fut...

Aidan on an Island: December 2011

http://islaidan.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 30, 2011. I'm staying in my site for New Years. This will be the first major(ish) holiday that I haven't spent with other Volunteers, and while I like the ability to decline participation in large group activities, the site seems to be conspiring to make me regret my decision. I can't make parents hug their kids. I can't stop them from hitting them. That's the hardest part of being here- it's not the poverty or lack of water and power and sanitation and American food. Aidan on an Island: March 2011

http://islaidan.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 31, 2011. Jessica, Chloe, and I worked on this article for the PCDR magazine, the Gringo Grita. New Chapters: Alfabetizing Peace Corps. Links to this post. The newest class of Peace Corps Trainees arrived in March! 160; After a week or two of training, each newbie goes out to visit a volunteer to see what their service is like.  I took Blair around to all my classes and groups, out to one of the bateys, and got to see Heidi's kids play baseball. . Every once in a while, we had to stop the...

Aidan on an Island: January 2012

http://islaidan.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 12, 2012. Today, we built a network. This morning, Emilio stopped by my house while I was making coffee, and I taught him how to strip. Ethernet cables. You see, today was the day I started teaching my youth about computer networking. In high school, we added on a sunroom to our house, so I took the opportunity to install ethernet jacks in the walls, and ran wires through the walls to the living room, new sunroom, my room, and my sister’s room. So, this is a lot of work, but it. 1 Contr...

Aidan on an Island: May 2011

http://islaidan.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 17, 2011. So, I started talking with other volunteers, trying to see if anyone knew of a good site.  I had managed UNC’s computer labs before joining Peace Corps, and I was nominated and accepted and trained for service as an Information and Communication Technology Specialist, so finding a strong IT site was. And, I know, crazy—working within my sector? I was excited.  This place felt good.  I hope that feeling wasn’t due to the unseasonably cool weather and light br...Links to this post.

Can I Tell You Something?: August 2008

http://monapoly.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Can I Tell You Something? Monday, August 11, 2008. What's a Hokie anyway? Let me tell you something. I'm not going to be answering that question I asked in the title.at least not in this post, because Honestly even after several people tried to explain it to me, I'm still confused on that point. (Not that I know what a Tar Heel is exactly either). I just thought you'd be reeled in to reading this because you may be wondering what a Hokie. Is too. haha. Manipulation, thy name is Mona. Yes, this word may b...

Aidan on an Island: October 2010

http://islaidan.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 22, 2010. I woke up today thinking it was Thursday. I planned my day for a Thursday. Today is Friday. The last time I remember being this disoriented was in high school, when the summer smushed into one long weekend. Instead, I’ve had a month of weekdays.  I need some wins. This is the horse that sometimes eats my front yard at night. It may or may not be a ghost. Dusk from my front porch, through the bars. Power lines at night. Links to this post. Aidan on an Island: Sweating in December

http://islaidan.blogspot.com/2011/12/sweating-in-december.html

Tuesday, December 20, 2011. I took two kids to the regional Brigada Verde conference, which was pretty fun. We went to the island in the middle of lake Enriquillo, the giant below-sea-level salt lake that is slowly rising, which may make it possible to kayak from Puerto Principe to Barahona in a few years. Thar be crocodiles! And giant iguanas with red eyes! View from CD’s apt in Santo Domingo. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. La Gringa en la República Dominicana. I was starting to feel useless, but at least there is hope in the world. This being real action done and not ideal plans set out.). I have also been looking for technology that could be used in order to complete the recycling process in place. This man has created an incredible machine. This article displays a few of ...

A Geographer's Blog | Views of an undergraduate geographer

A Geographer's Blog. Views of an undergraduate geographer. The end of Kings? February 5, 2012. The tallest and largest living thing on our planet is the giant sequoia tree. Reaching staggering heights of up to 85 metres and diameters of up to 8 metres, theses 3000 year old trees are most certainly the real ‘kings of the jungle’. The plants are not simply beautiful, majestic and humbling aesthetically; but are vitally important ecological icons. Fungi and pathogens like Dutch elm disease wipe out countles...

A Geographer's Kitchen

A Geographer's Kitchen. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. January 9, 2017. For the first recipe of 2017 my other half picked the country, the Czech Republic, and even found a recipe I could use on the National Geographic websit. E Back when I was doing bits of research in the Czech Republic I ate quite a lot of goulash, and when I took some students there in 2012. Some which add garlic, others which add peppers or a tomato, plus a range of other ingredients. 1 clove of garlic. This week...
