Onze boerderij ligt in de Zuidwijkse en Papewegsepolder, naast de Horsten van het Koningshuis waar Willem-Alexander en Maxima wonen. Tussen den Haag en Leiden in de provincie Zuid-Holland. In deze grotendeels veenpolders gedijt het vee bijzonder goed.

Is gefokt door het bekende Maas-Rijn-IJsselvee (MRIJ) te kruisen met een goedbevleesde ouderwetse Brandrode stier. Dag en nacht, zo lang het weer het toelaat, lopen de koeien buiten. Koeien in de wei is niet alleen een leuk gezicht, het is ook heel gezond en belangrijk voor het maken van kaas. In groeiend gras zit namelijk meervoudig onverzadigde vetzuren (de zogenaamde CLA's) en zodra het gras gemaaid wordt gaan deze verloren. Onze melk gaat naar een kaasfabriek, Cono kaasmakers.

Achtstands opentandem melkstal is in 1988 geplaatst met de bouw van de ligboxenstal. De melkstal is volautomatisch, dat wil zeggen automatisch voeren, melkstel afnemen, registreren van melkgiften en geleidbaarheid van de melk, en het automatisch in- en uitlaten van de koeien. In 2004 is de melkstal gereorganiseerd. Gemiddeld 100 koeien worden dagelijks twee keer gemolken. Jaarlijks wordt bijna 600.000 liter geproduceerd. De melk gaat naar Cono Kaasmakers.

Al in 1954 gooide opa hoge ogen op met de kwaliteit van zijn gemeste MRIJ koeien; vooral met Pasen wilden de slagers, die toen nog in groten getale naar de markten kwamen graag een zo best mogelijke "paaskoe" uitzoeken. Die tijd ligt al weer ver achter ons, markten bestaan nog nauwelijks en zelf een koe uitzoeken op de markt is verleden tijd.

Ons Wassenaars Roodbont vee is ontstaan uit het kruisen van Maas-Rijn-IJsselvee (MRIJ) en de ouderwetse Brandrode. Twee sterke veerassen. Vroeger kocht opa veel dikke koeien op de markt (Den Bosch en Rotterdam). Zij werden al melkend gemest. Bij MRIJ vee kwam nogal eens moeilijke geboorte voor en misboorlingen met dikke tong en kromme poten. Het is eigenlijk geen keizersnede, maar een koninklijke bevalling.
