At home in Cambodia. Sunday, January 25, 2009. Angkor Thom - Bayon. I'm going to talk about Angkor Thom in two posts, primarily because of the number of images I still have, even after a thorough culling. This post will deal with Bayon. While Angkor Wat's architecture has been described as classical, Bayon is baroque. It is singular among all of Angkor's structures for the massive four faced heads that rise up from the inner gallery. There are (or were) about 200 faces. Saturday, January 24, 2009. When w...

at home in Cambodia: Battambang

http://ahicambodia.blogspot.com/2009/05/battambang.html

At home in Cambodia. Sunday, May 17, 2009. Cambodia’s second largest city, with a population of about 150,000, spans the Sangker River. For its size it is quiet (even the central market didn’t seem overwhelming) and replete with charming colonial buildings, including a district governor’s mansion that seems all out of proportion to the importance that the position must have held. Like Phnom Penh, the central market is a good example of art deco architecture. Posted by Carl Anna-Marie at 4:12 PM.

At home in Cambodia. Friday, August 29, 2008. Labels: Our dog and our backyard - just to remind us. Posted by Carl Anna-Marie at 2:33 PM. Sunday, August 17, 2008. Posted by Carl Anna-Marie at 10:44 AM. Looking east (though we will fly west) snooping around Phnom Penh on Google Earth feels a bit like cheating, but I can't help myself. Fortunately, it really is not so revealing that I am removing all the mystery. The other building has living quarters. Anna-Marie is vying for the room with the terrace&...

at home in Cambodia: Happy New Year

http://ahicambodia.blogspot.com/2008/12/happy-new-year.html

At home in Cambodia. Wednesday, December 31, 2008. Happy holidays everyone. In two days we will be joining you in the frozen north. In the mean time, here are a few images from our past month of travels through Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. I'll just provide a numbered account of the locations for each image. 1 Ho Ho Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). 2 China Beach; it was chilly and rainy while we were here so this is the closest we got to a swim. 3 Hoi An; a UNESCO heritage location, a charming old town. Pretty...

Random acts of thinking. Saturday, February 25, 2012. NOT the door into summer! Friday, February 24, 2012. A Change is as Good as. So, like many people, I'm sure, we've always found that we expand to fill any given space, and that there's never enough of it, or we're never using it as well as we're sure we must be able. When we first moved to Wareham, the place seemed huge. Well.large, anyway. And since that first moment, there has never been enough space, ever again! For a while he has cast covetous eyes...

anti-v: A Painting Project

http://hamletofwareham.blogspot.com/2014/01/a-painting-project.html

Random acts of thinking. Saturday, January 25, 2014. A number of years ago there was this really attractive Kleenex box. I loved the design, and when I had the choice, made sure I bought that package for home. I thought it would make a really neat jumping off point for a wall treatment. But somehow the renovation never seemed to happen. And while I wasn't particularly planning on re-doing the bathroom here, the wall opposite the door had some obvious 'we have moved the towel rack' signs, with some scruff...

Random acts of thinking. Friday, October 21, 2011. The level of our pond always goes down in the summer, and in fall we anxiously await it filling again with the autumn rains. One season it dropped perilously low, and didn't fill deep enough before it froze. We lost most of the 'big' fish that year. What our fish breathe during the winter is more of a mystery. Random acts of thinking. Wednesday, April 06, 2011. Coltsfoot, one of the very first signs of spring growth. Contrasts. Not just the black cat against the white snow, but the fact that there's somewhere not snowy for him to walk as well! Other small sprouting things; more daffs, crocii, and scylla. Wonder of wonders: the rhubarb is already starting, even under ice! And while it may not last for long, the weather forecast for the weekend, as of this aft, is for actual near-summer temps! Random acts of thinking. Sunday, November 13, 2011. The Shape of Things To Come. Random acts of thinking. Monday, June 20, 2011. Montreal Bagels, Wareham-style. A couple of weekends ago we were visiting with friends, and other friends, up from the city, had brought bagels. Wonderful fresh bagels from the St. Lawrence Market. It's been a long time since I've had really good Montreal style bagels. (In fact, so long that I'd almost forgotten how exquisite they can be! I love the cookbooks by Naomi Duguid and Jeffrey Alford. They're beautiful, full of fabulous food and culture and tr...

At home in Ghana. This is a periodic blog detailing some of my experiences as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Ghana. Friday, May 10, 2013. So there are definitely plenty of reasons why its just basic common sense to make the stuff yourself. Howsabout a three week burn, mmmm? Here, people make their ow...
