I wonder if the number of children one has is directly related to the number of small children’s parties one actually gives, or avoids giving? My canny Scottish mother gave just one that I remember (she had six children). It had to be called a Victory Party to circumvent the government rules about extravagance, or food coupons, or something. The second party was for a small boy who lives here on the farm.

We have an overenthusiastic guinea hen mother sitting on a HUGE clutch of eggs in my kikuyu grass ‘succulent ’garden. I can’t help feeling she is doing community service for being particularly hysterical and daft. I think every other broody mother has laid her eggs in the same nest (I stopped counting at twenty) and this silly old girl is doing the incubating. Friday, 14 October 2011.
