cereal and chopsticks: Narcissism
http://cerealandchopsticks.blogspot.com/p/narcissism.html
Questions, Comments, and Snail Mail. After teaching high school English for a tiny bit in North Carolina, I decided I was no where near settling down and brought my love of travel and educating together. I moved to Korea to teach English. I've been in Naju for over a year now, and can't seem to part with my wee city love. Supposedly Naju is famous for it's pears. Too bad I don't enjoy pears. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Kyoto: One Week of Food. Coming home from Korea, and being expected to tip everywhere.

Questions, Comments, and Snail Mail. Saturday, October 11, 2014. Hartseer. In Afrikaans it means sad or brokenhearted. Regardless of the meaning, it's one of my favorite words in the language just because of the way it's pronounced. I did say most. But it turns out that moving to South Africa isn't happening either. It's easiest to tell the reasons why in this ever so efficient timeline. August: Finally have a friend at the department intervene, and transcripts are in. Can I work as a student? Calls and ...

Questions, Comments, and Snail Mail. Sunday, June 22, 2014. What to Expect When the Expat Visits. It's a strange time, when the expat visits. She looks mostly the same. She sounds a bit funny. Did she always talk like that? What do I act exactly? Don't worry. I have a list. What happens when the person in your life who lives over seas comes home? How should you prepare? What sort of ready proofing of the mind should you undertake? WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN THE EXPAT VISITS. 5 Along those same lines, be patient...

cereal and chopsticks: A Quitter
http://cerealandchopsticks.blogspot.com/2013/11/a-quitter.html
Questions, Comments, and Snail Mail. Thursday, November 14, 2013. That's what I used to do. Then I moved to Korea. Now, I teach university students. I make lesson plans that meet only my criteria. I never stay up late grading papers. I answer kakaos and text messages from worried students. I only worry about my students passing the class. I have never thought about breaking up a fight or wondering if a student is going to harm themselves, others, or me in class. And you know what? Maybe the only way we c...

Questions, Comments, and Snail Mail. Monday, November 18, 2013. But then I came to Korea. Land of lifestyle change. I don't know why, but I tried again for the 395th time to train for a 5k. I downloaded the Couch to 5k running app and started training without telling anybody. Didn't want to fail and have people know! The horror. Then a friend and coworker told me she was running too. We are strictly non-runners. Yet, here we were. Running. Alone. We ran our first 5k yesterday. After race triumph picture.

Questions, Comments, and Snail Mail. Monday, August 19, 2013. Completing a compulsory three week English Language camp brought some harsh realities into the light. I know I've made mention of the Korean education system before, but haven't really explained in detail. It's one of those cultural oddities that make people gasp, every once in and a while will make international news, and leaves most expats shaking their heads. They would share creative ideas, draw some of the best stuff free handed, and expl...

cereal and chopsticks: July 2013
http://cerealandchopsticks.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Questions, Comments, and Snail Mail. Friday, July 12, 2013. My friends and I weren't trying to be hateful or make ourselves be the better of the two. We were expressing frustrations we had experienced in a slew of situations lately, situations that happen over and over again. For example, men peeing in public. I don't even want to count how many times that's happened to me. I cannot unsee this stuff people! She did. I know she did. When I met my friend later I asked her, What did this old lady call me?
