One of our first projects was an experiential training day for Probation field deputies. This was so successful, it was followed by a training for Juvenile Court Probation staff. This was a transformative experience for teaching artists and Probation staff, and affirmed the importance of arts as a healing-informed strategy for both youth and staff. Arts for Incarcerated Youth Network | ARTS EDUCATION

AIYN seeks to integrate arts as an effective sentencing alternative, a critical intervention to address trauma for youth who are incarcerated, and a foundational strategy for successful reentry. We have been working with Probation and the Arts Commission to develop the arts modules, create evaluation/assessment measures, and build the foundation for eventual expansion to all 13 camps and all three halls in LA County. We estimate over 500 young people will be reached in this first year.

There is a growing focus on the significance of arts programming in terms of transformation and effective preparation for community reentry. However, systematic efforts at implementation and evaluation have been limited. AIYN is part of an emerging large scale movement that draws on arts to heal trauma, build identity and develop skills to transform individuals.

A truly exciting component of the year-round program is that artists at sites with a Solitary Housing/Specialized Handling Unit (SHU) will spend their module using arts to work with the youth to reimagine, redesign, and reclaim these SHU spaces in anticipation of eliminating the use of solitary for young people in Los Angeles County.
