http://cantorialcrossoverculture.blogspot.com/2013/08/what-balfour-declaration-of-1917.html
Friday, February 1, 2013. Text of the Balfour "declaration" of 1917. The oft misquoted “Balfour declaration” (1917) should not be confused with the Balfour Declaration (1926) which referred to administration of the Dominions. For former is in fact one single sentence, approved by the UK cabinet, in which a favourable view is expressed upon the establishment of a Jewish national home in Palestine, with detailed conditions. [It contains at least one grammatical error.]. Posted by Andrew Byrne. Our second v...

Tuesday, February 26, 2013. A Semitic learning curve - enjoyable forays with the faithful - no secrets, no conspiracies. Since becoming secular at an early age I have always marvelled at people of faith. Some are young, naïve and gullible yet many are also driven, intelligent and mature adults. And many are respected friends of mine, although they are far outnumbered by folk who would describe themselves as agnostic, atheist and/or non-God-fearing. Each of these could form a chapter in a small description.

Cantorial cross-over culture: April 2009

Thursday, April 30, 2009. Andrew Byrne seeks a Jewish musical tradition in New York: April 2009. Shearith Israel Synagogue Central Park West and 70th Street. I was told that few Manhattan shules have choirs any more, at least for regular shabbos services. Some say that a choir makes the congregation less likely to sing themselves – and I found some evidence of that on this visit although it is clearly not the case at Central. At least he was pleasant and forthcoming. In Lecha dodi at least half the m...

Cantorial cross-over culture: Where do I stand on Israel?
http://cantorialcrossoverculture.blogspot.com/2013/08/i-believe-in-inalienable-right-of-all.html
Friday, January 18, 2013. Where do I stand on Israel? Many commentators have expressed the view that the continued survival and prosperity of Israel long-term is inextricably linked to a genuine and enduring peace with the Palestinians, co-custodians of the Holy Land today.
