Babies who brunch. on tour. In the land of the Midnight Sons. Friday, June 29, 2012. LEGO lessons - by Daddy J. Because what lies at the heart of LEGOLAND, amid the pint-sized monorails and nobbly-bricked replicas of Hanseatic streets? LEGOREDO: the plastic piece people's homage to the harsh individualism of the Old West, complete with right-angled Rushmore. August 23, 2012 at 10:48 AM. Great p...

Babies who brunch. on tour. In the land of the Midnight Sons. Sunday, June 24, 2012. At Louisiana, by Louis. HAS ANYONE ever thought about the downsides to living in the world’s happiest place? Because that’s where we are, according to the UN’s survey of global happiness. What if you wake up in a bad mood? Or on a campsite with the rain thundering down on your tent (see previous post)? Is now a Thames and Hudson book for goodness sake – perhaps you just like cycling in a fleece. Babies who travel might b...

Babies who brunch... on tour: December 2011

Babies who brunch. on tour. In the land of the Midnight Sons. Saturday, December 24, 2011. O sprawling dump of Bethlehem'. The star marks The Spot. I felt bad using a copy of the Christmas Story to prime Louis: he was hoping for straw and an actual stable at one point despite all my caveats. Luckily his inner consumer was as excited about the wooden crib scene I'd promised as finding the actual spot of the birth. Tuesday, December 20, 2011. The city that Christmas forgot. Friday, December 9, 2011. Me, I ...

Babies who brunch. on tour. In the land of the Midnight Sons. Tuesday, November 29, 2011. IT WAS Louis who spotted her: the stenciled lady on the side of a bus shelter, just up the hill from our flat. She'd appeared overnight, the familiar silhouette that adorns toilet signs the world over, rendered unfamiliar in the context of a Jerusalem advertising hoarding. From the army, where religious conscripts are being urged to walk out of events when women sing, to religious schools, which are banning dads fro...

Babies who brunch. on tour. In the land of the Midnight Sons. Monday, September 20, 2010. Nursery: the hidden upside. Who knew there was an upside to nurseries? How could I do it? I couldn't stop thinking how wrong it felt for all that a) it's only two days a week, b) it's actually a very nice nursery and I know he's lucky to have a place there, and c) aren't they supposed to teach even toddlers useful skills such as socialising, etc, etc? And I can stop worrying about the parade of new faces at nursery.

Book I gave DJ for his birthday by going on our own Palestinian walk today. Into Wadi Qelt. A valley that stretches east across the Judean desert to Jericho. Monday, October 24, 2011. At Hisham's Palace; note the flag. It certainly felt like another state: we might not have needed our passports, but we did pass through a Palestinian-controlled checkpoint. Is...

Babies who brunch. on tour. In the land of the Midnight Sons. Tuesday, May 18, 2010. Parents-to-be face many conundrums from whether or not they should find out the sex to where to give birth. Not to mention what pointless baby crap to buy. As if the hours we spent debating which buggy to buy (Bugaboo Gecko, if you're wondering, although in retrospect I favour the Bee) weren't enough, I also stressed about which surname we should use and whether whoever popped out should eat meat. . You can see how popul...

Babies who brunch. on tour. In the land of the Midnight Sons. Tuesday, August 31, 2010. The Imperial Digger Museum. You know when people tell you not to worry about something until it happens? But as it turned out, I needn't have fretted. Louis took one look at the giant caterpillar tracks on the tanks dotted throughout the ground floor and said: "Diggers! And no doubt we'll back at the Imperial War Museum soon enough, if only on another "digger" hunt. Wednesday, August 4, 2010. Unless you have a househo...
