Last Wednesday was Ash Wednesday, the first day of lent and it swiftly follows pancake Tuesday (Shrove Tuesday). Lent is the 40 days before Easter (excluding the 6 Sundays) in the religious calendar which marks a period of fasting and prayer (reflecting the 40-day fast that Jesus underwent in the desert).
