A knitter's natter

From a knitter living in Hampden in the South Island of New Zealand. Thursday, September 26, 2013. A while back I mentioned some beautiful 4-ply alpaca which I had bought from Doe Arnot. After much deliberation I made this from it:. It's a great relief to shed all those kilos of fabric and boning afterwards. How much easier to play the music dressed like this, though without the sunglasses of course:. Also, I thought about the fate of Anne Boleyn and worked the King Charles brocade pattern into the main ...

A knitter's natter: June 2012

http://aknittersnatter.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

From a knitter living in Hampden in the South Island of New Zealand. Saturday, June 30, 2012. From the Back of the Cupboard. Twenty or so years ago I bought a copy of Madeline Weston's book The Traditional Sweater Book. It was the second book of traditional designs I had owned. The first was Michael Pearson's Traditional Knitting. Friday, June 29, 2012. I've made a few vintage jumpers from patterns from the 1930s to the 1950s. I've made a design or three for Renaissance Dyeing. There have been useful but...

A knitter's natter: August 2012

http://aknittersnatter.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

From a knitter living in Hampden in the South Island of New Zealand. Thursday, August 30, 2012. Queen of the Night. I used to really enjoy a dress rehearsal on a sunny day when I'd be sitting in the dark at the Opera House, eating minties and watching the dragon at the start of The Magic Flute cavorting, or perhaps galumphing around the stage. And the Queen of the Night - what a crosspatch! Shoving her daughter around and screaming at her to go and kill Sarastro. So nasty and unnecessary.

A knitter's natter: August 2010

From a knitter living in Hampden in the South Island of New Zealand. Sunday, August 29, 2010. I found the design process was less traumatic than I thought it would be but I also thought it might be an idea to make up some designs and kits for tams that many people have said they loved before designing anything new. A knitter's natter: July 2010

http://aknittersnatter.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

From a knitter living in Hampden in the South Island of New Zealand. Wednesday, July 21, 2010. Here is a design that will also be launched at Knit Nation. This month. This is one I test knitted for Mary Lena Lynx in Belgium. It's the second of two colourways. This one is softer and brighter than the first - more feminine, Mary Lena says. The wool is all dyed with natural dyes by Renaissance Dyeing. And here are the original colours -. We have a small flock of Wiltshire sheep. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

A knitter's natter: Isabella

http://aknittersnatter.blogspot.com/2013/04/isabella.html

From a knitter living in Hampden in the South Island of New Zealand. Thursday, April 25, 2013. Back in the spring, on our visit to Akaroa, I took along a scarf I'd just finished so we could photograph it. It's been quietly waiting since then for Andie at Renaissance Dyeing to get in some new stock of the Blue Faced Leicester wool that I used to knit it. I believe she has a new supply now and only needs a new dyehouse to dye it in. February 19, 2014 at 3:07 AM. February 26, 2014 at 1:23 AM. Subscribe to: ...

http://doespins.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Hangs by a thread. Spinning, crochet, weaving and dyeing. Sunday, April 13, 2014. Woven Alpaca and wool tunic. Remember this fabric from last year. With different areas of pattern. It turned into several metres of fabric. And finally got sewn into a tunic utilising nearly every bit of the fabric. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out and should help keep me warm on my days in the cold stone textile shop this winter. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Doe's shop on FELT. Hangs by a thread. Spinning, crochet, weaving and dyeing. Wednesday, October 8, 2014. The rewards for working with plant dyes are subtle but complex and beautiful colour. And. Mostly a fragrant slightly earthy smelling dye shed. I love how the colours all go together and how so few dyestuffs can bring out many different colours. Modified by heat, acid or alkali. Plush buttercup yellow and plummy purple. Even on a dull day like today the colours gently vibrate. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Doe's shop on FELT.

Hangs by a thread. Spinning, crochet, weaving and dyeing. Wednesday, February 4, 2015. This is the wheel I have spun kilos and kilos of yarn on nearly every day for the past 7 or maybe 8 years. Her foot boards are now worn thin, the hinges needing to be replaced soon. She's no beauty compared to her Majacraft sisters. The plain but serviceable one. The Cinderella. Hangs by a thread. Spinning, crochet, weaving and dyeing. Tuesday, March 4, 2014. Sheep such as these from Black Hill's wool (photo from the website here. You can go onto Beverley Forester's website. To purchase the gorgeous wool from her sheep above already spun. I have a good pile of naturally coloured wool myself. But I also love to overdye it since the undertones of the pale greys, browns and moorit give the colours a soft tonal quality without having to resort to black dye. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Hangs by a thread. Spinning, crochet, weaving and dyeing. Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Lots of sales in our Textile Co-operative shop over the summer means lots more dyeing, weaving and making. This time of the year we also do some reassessment of what stock hasn't earns its shelf space and what new things we could do to attract more sales. Hand dyed fibres and yarns. Hangs by a thread. Spinning, crochet, weaving and dyeing. Tuesday, December 30, 2014. Dyeing in the summer is such a treat. The yarns dry quickly and I can throw the shed doors open wide. The NZ plants glow in the evening light as do the plant dyed fibres, mimicking the colours of our garden. We have loads of native trees from manuka, flax, ribbon wood, lancewoods, hebes, kowhai etc and so our garden is full of birdsong. We've enjoyed walks to the sea whilst waiting for the dye baths to cool. Oamaru Weavi...

Hangs by a thread. Spinning, crochet, weaving and dyeing. Wednesday, January 21, 2015. Further dyeing with Phormium Tenax. I'm like the Tui returning to the Flax regularly only I swipe a few seed pods and leave the flowers to the birds. I decided to make some dye extract so I had plenty to use over the next few months when the pods in the garden become dried out husks. Oh and cook with a lid too, which controls the steam and the smell a bit. So Once cooked sieve the dye liquor and pour into an old flat bo...

Hangs by a thread. Spinning, crochet, weaving and dyeing. Wednesday, January 29, 2014. Well I may not be blogging much but there has been activity in Herbert over the summer. Dodging the rain clouds to get the outside of the house painted. Husband and daughter have been chief decorators. It's only a small house but the work seems endless. And there's still the three bay old wooden garage to do.fortunately under the peeling paint the rimu boards are in great condition. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Hangs by a thread. Spinning, crochet, weaving and dyeing. Saturday, July 5, 2014. In the dye shed. I've been quiet on here recently but I have been really busy in the real world of my dye shed refiguring the space so I can increase my output with a better system and more useable space. This is going to involve dyeing bigger quantities of yarn in much bigger vats but keeping on with small runs of the variegated yarns. I have dyed a few sock yarns on my two days off. The Jolly Knitter

Saturday, 10 January 2009. Six month knitting recap. Well, it looks like I haven't made a post in about six months! And so, a brief summary perhaps. Since August, I've knit a fair few things. From a swallowtail shawl for myself. My cat went missing. He was gone 7 days. Previously, his longest absence was 3 days. Upon his return, he barely shifted from the pictured position for nearly a week. He still refuses to confess as to his whereabouts during that week. I also knitted most of a jumper. That's it...
