Storm damage to Chesil Beach 2014. On February 8th there was a storm which followed on from the one on 4-5th February. I have no pictures of the 4-5th February storm as Portland was cut off as the access road was flooded. In this picture the Environment Agency were on site and the flood gates were closed. Storm damage to Chesil Beach 2014. By the end of April the undermined sea wall protection was complete as seen in this picture and it had become a sun bathing spot! However, work continued on the damaged gabion tower and gabion mattress just NW of the Cove Inn. The gabion mattress seen here on the landward side is critical in protecting the crest of the beach near the Cove Inn and helping to protect the property in Chiswell and Victoria Square. Storm damage to Chesil Beach 2014. By early March the period of stormy weather had ended and new coastal protection work was undertaken to re-enforce the undermined sea wall. In this picture, taken on March 5th, sheet piling is being banged into the Kimmerage Clay. Notice also the rock armour in front of the sheet piling put in place to stop any further wave attack while the work was being progressed. The storms had taken their toll on the Cove Inn which was in need of some TLC! Create a free website.

Storm damage to Chesil Beach 2014. New gabions, wire 'bags' which will be filled with shingle were constructed to replace the damaged ones. Some were damaged by storm activity but in some cases they were weakened because people lit bbqs on top of the gabion mattress and this caused the original plastic coated wire to catch fire!
