Mobile phones & food in Africa | Fig jam

Mobile phones and food in Africa. I’ve recently read Poor Economics, a great study of the poor in developing countries. One of the interesting observations was that if you give the poorest of the poor an extra $1 per day, they only spend 40c on additional food. The remaining 60c goes towards entertainment. Turns out being poor is boring. And the remaining 40c does not go on more. Food It goes toward more expensive. This tells me a couple of things (in a generalized way):. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
Dodos and the importance of making decisions | Fig jam

Dodos and the importance of making decisions. Decision-making is like evolution. The wrong decision and you’re dead. No decision and you’re dead. Right decision and you’re alive. The dodo is a great example. At some point in history, a dodo was born that could not fly. The (temporary) lack of predators on Mauritius meant the non-flying dodo could survive and reproduce, and from there came tens of thousands of dodos. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Social buying, social reading, social TV, social music. Everywhere you go, every magazine you open, every link you click, Social is the wave of the future. I read this morning that Mark Zuckerberg is the billionaire with the greatest increase in wealth in the past year. $11billion, no doubt due to the streaking success of Facebook. Facebook is a yes, you guessed it, Social network. Social capitalism. Maybe one day this will be the new black. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Bernie Ebb...
Lessons from the Olympic Games for your business | Fig jam
https://alanknottcraig.wordpress.com/lessons-from-the-olympic-games-for-your-business
Lessons from the Olympic Games for your business. On Monday I had the privilege of listening to (Lord) Sebastian Coe, Chairman of the London Organising Committee for the 2012 Olympics. He used a great analogy for how to view the Olympics which I think is perfect for how you view your business. If you think about it, the Olympics is an enormous HR project. It starts with one person and then rapidly snowballs into thousands of staff and volunteers, only to revert to zero on the day after the Olympics!
Keep your eye on the ball | Fig jam
https://alanknottcraig.wordpress.com/keep-your-eye-on-the-ball
Keep your eye on the ball. Did you watch the Proteas snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yesterday? For the umpteenth time, our national cricket side has caved in when victory seemed assured. Most of the commentators seem to be blaming mental weakness and a tendency to choke in high-pressure situations. As tempting as it is to blame weak parenting (because that can be the only cause of mental weakness,) I disagree. Overconfidence breeds complacency. Complacency breeds failure. It seems no coincidence ...

Why is anonymity important in Africa? I used to be against anonymity. When I read the forums and comments sections on sites like Moneyweb and MyAdsl my knee-jerk reaction was: Online anonymity should be banned. It provides a cover for racists, misfits and angry people. What’s wrong with using your real identity? What are you afraid of? If you have a problem then you must have something to hide. And then I clicked. What did he miss the most? Not money. Not food. Not shelter. No private space to be. 2 Resp...

The weblog of Alan Knox. Are you a leader? Posted by Alan Knox. On Nov 10, 2013 in blog links. When my children were younger, we would read a book to them called. Are You My Mother? At the beginning of the book, a bird is hatched, and it spends the remainder of the book looking for its mother. The young bird asks anything and everything it sees (a cow, a dog, even a power shovel), “Are you my mother? 8221; The bird did not know what its mother would be like….
