There were no big surprises in the June 12 provincial election results. I think everyone knew Liz Sandals would get back in. Wynne’s two main contenders, Tim Hudak and Andrea Horwath, took careful aim at her and shot themselves in the foot. This wasn’t the only platform malfunction that plagued Horwath’s campaign...

Alan Pickersgill: The view from here. Conservative mischief hurts the chamber. Politicians must give voters a reason to go to the polls →. Thursday, 24 July, 2014 · 9:00 am. Transit lockout: a management failure. Earlier this week, local union president Andrew Cleary sent an e-mail to the CBC in Kitchener. It said he was prepared to endure the lockout until after the October elections. The workers at Guelph Transit are angry and someone in the city should ask them why. Part of the answer will take us...

There are a couple of misconceptions about municipal elections that won’t go away. One is that it doesn’t matter who is the mayor because she only has one vote. The other is that partisan politics doesn’t exist at the local level. Yes, it matters, and yes, it does exist. The mayor represents us at provincial, federal and international conferences. Alan Pickersgill: The view from here. Urbacon: why are we in this mess? Time to teach a lesson →. Thursday, 08 May, 2014 · 5:30 pm. Think globally, vote locally. We recently returned home after a week in east Tennessee. It’s one of my favourite places outside of Canada, full of rich history, good mountain music and memorable literature. It sits on the edge of the Smoky Mountains, close to Kentucky, West Virginia and North Carolina. We got home last Friday, the day on which the province wandered into a ge...

If a politician can get out of the gate quickly with a strongly presented position, it has a good chance of sticking. At the same time, if the position is not effectively developed, a negative perception will carry the day. Guthrie’s hasty response may have damaged the city’s ability to argue an appeal if it chooses to do so. At...

Conservative mischief hurts the chamber. I was going to stay out of the latest tempest in a Tory teapot, but after reading last Saturday’s Mercury I find myself drawn in. If the chamber is going to organize all-candidate meetings during elections, Longfield must strictly guard its nonpartisan nature, I told him. At first I was happy to gi...

The provincial election is creeping towards a conclusion next Thursday. The party leaders have not given voters much reason to get off their couches. They haven’t inspired confidence or built enthusiasm. The strategic voting chickens have come to rule the roost. What is it that people don’t like? The rest of it? Hudak would...
