Friday, October 29, 2010. On our last day, Marc took over the role of tour director for the DeYoung clan and led us on a lovely walk along the Tiber River to Trastevere. We stopped at a small church, Santa Cecilia, and saw a very old and very lovely 13th century fresco. We then walked up the Janiculum Hill to the park there and enjoyed breathtaking views of the city. We took a leisurely walk through the Forum, viewing the ruins of temples to Caesar, Jupiter, and vestal virgins, triumphal arches, and the public basilicas, which became the model for the great Christian churches. Saturday, October 23, 2010. The plan for today was the wholesale market—the belly of Strasbourg. But we failed to get an early enough start and most of it had closed. Wait, is that. why yes it is. Old blue eyes is hack. Fortunately, there was an IKEA next door, which provided sufficient entertainment. After lunch we went to the Orangrie—a lovely park, with a lake and zoo. Wednesday, October 27, 2010. We were up bright and early Wednesday to walk to St. Peter’s Square for our audience with the Pope. Overnight parking is discouraged. We needed to be early for good seats because the tickets were for open seating and had been issued to 12,000 or so people. People were there from all over the world. Thursday, October 28, 2010. The itinerary for this very special day was St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museum. We began with the basilica and the first thing that caught our eye when we entered was Michelangelo’s Pieta. And it is lovely. It is hard to imagine he did this at the age of 23. Sunday, October 24, 2010. Nous sommes des pèlerins. We boarded a large bus at around 7 pm, and drove until arriving in Rome about 13 hours later. Immediately after boarding Père Regis provided a champagne toast and a blessing so we were well armed for this rather long road trip. He has been making these trips for 17 years.
