Alaskanwisdom

Monday, December 27, 2010. The overall question for this class asked me how I can use digital resources to integrate into Alaska ways of knowing in order to better enhance my student's learning. Over the course of the semester I used what I learned in many ways, but I think that the most applicable was a science lesson involving state change, and another lesson involving Salmon fishing and fishing management. The state of matter lesson was very close to the one from Module 8: Phun Physics of Phase change.

Alaskanwisdom: Module 4 Cataclysmic events

http://alaskanwisdom.blogspot.com/2010/11/module-4-cataclysmic-events.html

Monday, November 1, 2010. Module 4 Cataclysmic events. Essential question: How do stories of cataclysmic events inform students about geoscience and learning. this question cam from Explore Alaska. How would I use this in my classroom? Well, part of what I teach to third graders is a unit on social studies and I've found that talking about natural disasters of any kind gets them interested. I know it worked for me for several reasons:. We took our boat over la Chaussee Spit and saw the rock scraped bare ...

Alaskanwisdom: Module 5:How are climate, cultures, and oceans all connected

http://alaskanwisdom.blogspot.com/2010/11/module-5how-are-climate-cultures-and.html

Friday, November 5, 2010. Module 5:How are climate, cultures, and oceans all connected. Because I live next to the ocean many of the topics discussed in this week's module were already familiar to me. Here are a few of the things I related to:. The cultural connections between seasons and the lifestyles of indigenous peoples, many of my students go to Dog Point Fish Camp. Conference is held here - focusing on human migration and the ocean currents. One recource that I use (honestly because I am a part of...

Monday, October 25, 2010. I visited Marylin at Many Paths to Knowledge. I visited Michelle at Explore Alaska Southeast. I visited Alicia at Science Exploration. Module 3 : landscapes and cultures. I guess in a way our landscape is changing, growing to include these new things and ideas, and our culture is growing with it. As we have learned, the land is always changing with erosion, volcanos, and other geological processes, but now rather than change slowly, it is growing at an amazing rate. Truly knowin...

Alaskanwisdom: Module 6 : How are the Earth, atmosphere, and cultures all connected?

http://alaskanwisdom.blogspot.com/2010/11/module-6-how-are-earth-atmosphere-and.html

Thursday, November 11, 2010. Module 6 : How are the Earth, atmosphere, and cultures all connected? In this module I got a lot of new information. I guess this is a topic that I never really thought about - which when I think about it is surprising, especially since atmosphere is everywhere and linked to everything. I found the TD post about the jet stream. Very interesting, because recently my home newspaper, the Sitka Daily Sentinel. How will I use this information in my classroom? Another lesson I did ...

Science Explorations: October 2010

http://scienceinalaska.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

Learning how to integrate the science and land Alaska has to offer. Sunday, October 31, 2010. I then started to think about how it would impact the culture. I looked at the video on the 1964 earthquake and thought about how a natural disaster such as one of these would destroy an entire village. I thought how about you would adapt to so many deaths in a small community. It talked about how some people left and never came back—that would have a great impact on any land. Living on the Coast. I liked how he...

Monday, November 22, 2010. Earth's Climate Connecting to Geological, Biological and Cultural Systems. We started with an interesting dichotomy:. If it wasn't for Global Cooling, the Beringia land bridge wouldn't have formed, making it impossible for the influx of new inhabitants to North America. It it wasn't for Global Warming, large areas in North America could not have been inhabited because of the glacial ice sheets. You win some. You lose some. Image from powells.com. Sunday, October 24, 2010. Module III: Geography is Culture! What would our world be like if its plates didn’t move? Without the ancient systems to create landforms it is likely that resources could be largely unconcentrated and very hard to gather and support life. As I reflect on my teaching, I am excited that I am making connecting geography and culture as one of the cornerstones of my 7. Using Google Earth and other mapping software will continue to be a large part of my courses. I am continually ...

Sunday, December 12, 2010. Talk about going out with a bang! This module was chock full of information, and I thought it was the best. For some reason I am particularly captivated by all of the information regarding glaciers, seasonal ice and permafrost.
