The skeletal roof has been fitted with eight strong casters (4 on each side) and temporarily placed into position to check alignment and accuracy of construction. Notice that the roof beam members are still to be fitted. The initial drop of the pent roof (towards the west) had to be increased as it was felt that some pools of rain water may remain on the roof. View (looking due south) showing the two lengths of angle iron (painted black) screwed into place on top of the 4ft high walls and rail supports.

I decided early on that I would lay hard wearing carpet in the observatory as it would both improve the general insulation from the ground and also act as a cushion. Should any eyepieces be dropped. One member of the Society (South East Kent Astronomical Society) jokingly commented that the carpet was better than they had in their living room! An important moment - the tube and optics are brought down to the observatory for the first time.

A high viewpoint (looking due west) showing the roof and doors open, and the telescope swung into position ready for observing. To help with dark adaptation and reduce general reflections I decided to paint the interior of the observatory. While not everyone feels this is necessary (many observatories are left with bare wood inside) I felt a deep blue interior rather than black would be visually pleasing while achieving the required effect. 2 by 2 upright corner posts were screwed into place to which the completed wall frames would be attached at a later stage. 3/4 thick shuttering was then laid down for the floor. A solid concrete base was decided against so as to help reduce air currents during the summer months (at least that's the theory! Paul Thomsett (right) helps with the concreting of the pier. The walls are now in position and the tongue and groove is being tacked into place.
