Thanks for a Wonderful Semester! April 29, 2015. This has been an absolute whirlwind of a semester! There was not a class that went by in which I didn’t learn anything (and most of the time I learned multiple things)! And even though I feel like I understand solar systems and the universe a little better now, I can definitely say that the universe is a little more mysterious now than it was before! Each new thing we learned just brought along a whole slew of new questions to be answered! A topic that I w...

Neptune and Uranus – The Odd Couple | The Solar System

Neptune and Uranus – The Odd Couple. April 15, 2015. April 15, 2015. Something that I noticed while reading chapter 11 about the jovian planets is that Uranus and Neptune are weird. They seem to be more often exceptions to the rules more often than they are followers of the rules! One more example would be with Uranus and Neptune’s magnetospheres. While other planets’ magnetospheres are closely aligned with the planet’s rotation, this is not true for Uranus and Neptune! Saturn’s Peculiar Rotation. Possib...

Archaeoastronomy | The Solar System

February 14, 2015. February 14, 2015. One of the topics I found most interesting to think about in these readings is the topic of archaeoastronomy. I had never even heard of this concept before reading chapter 3! Some believe that the famed Stonehenge. Is a site that ancient inhabitants of Britain used for astronomy! And even today, with all that we know about the sky, different cultures view it in different ways something that will probably continue for the rest of human civilization. Notify me of new c...

Venus’s Atmosphere | The Solar System
https://abbeyrstephens.wordpress.com/2015/03/15/venuss-atmosphere
March 15, 2015. March 15, 2015. In my opinion, one of the most interesting things in the readings was the section about Venus and its atmosphere in Chapter 10. What I found so interesting about it was the fact that Venus and Earth are so alike in terms of size and mass, but the difference that distance from the Sun made on the two planets is astounding! Comparison of Venus’s and Earth’s atmospheres! Above is a neat comparison of the atmospheres of Venus and Earth. Jupiter’s Watery Moon →. On Neptune and ...

Historical Astronomers in Context. February 4, 2015. February 4, 2015. The astronomer I chose to look closer at was Tycho Brahe. He was born on December 14, 1546 and died on October 24, 1601 at the age of 54. During his life, two major events that happened were the Massacre of Novgorod by Ivan the Terrible and the founding of Buenos Aires by Juan de Garay. The Massacre of Novgorod. In 1580, Juan de Garay. Since we tend to study famous individuals and famous events on their own, as stand-alones , it can b...

Earth-Like Planets? | The Solar System
https://abbeyrstephens.wordpress.com/2015/02/14/earth-like-planets
February 14, 2015. There was a journal article released last week from the Australian National University with the title, Scientists Predict Earth-Like Planets around Most Stars . To summarize, using the idea of the Goldilocks zone (the distance from a star where liquid water can exist) and applying it to the exoplanets discovered by the Kepler telescope, astronomers have predicted that there are hundreds of billions of Earth-like planets in the Milky Way galaxy alone. Wow! Venus’s Atmosphere →. Neptune ...
