The brief was to consider designing and making a product which has been commissioned to be part of the standard room facilities in a chain of 'Design' hotels, with the emphasis on contemporary style. I decided to run with the idea of making a product for a themed hotel. I love the 1950s 'Atomic' designs and wanted to make something kitsch and fun. I decided to use Jelutong (close grained timber) for the main body of the saucer, with the intention of then spray painting the finished product to a high gloss finish to mimic plastic. The legs were to be 3D printed and due to the high demand (and huge queue) for the CNC router, these were manufactured first. The legs required some sanding and fine surface filling before being primed ready for painting. In these photos the ledge for the dome to sit is being machined on a standard router….
