Alexander's Astronomy Sketching: Article: Cooling of Newtonian optics - an insight
http://www.alexanderastrosketching.blogspot.com/2015/04/article-cooling-of-newtonian-optics.html
Art and science meet in my adventures in sketching astronomical objects. Here I detail my travels across Australia with my telescopes, and from home, the people I meet and the technical challenges I encounter. From our closest neighbour, the Moon, to the furthest galaxies. From the seemingly trivial to the mind bending complex. All is fair game for my sketch pad. And continuing the tradition of The Mellish Technique. Monday, 20 April 2015. Article: Cooling of Newtonian optics - an insight. List of Visibl...

Polluted Skies stargazing: November 2016
http://pollutedskiesstargazing.blogspot.com/2016_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, November 30, 2016. Two autumn globular clusters. Before this month ends and with it the fall in the northern hemisphere, I would like to share two of my favorite globular clusters of the Autumn sky: M2 in Aquarius and M15 in Pegasus, both very close neighbors only about 12° from each other. In the end, I sketched an idea of what I could see with averted vision. Edited by: Jennifer Steinberg (editor in chief). Links to this post. Thursday, November 10, 2016. M57, Planetary Nebula in Lyra. A sta...

Polluted Skies stargazing: May 2016
http://pollutedskiesstargazing.blogspot.com/2016_05_01_archive.html
Monday, May 23, 2016. 252P/Linear and C/2014 S2 Panstarrs. 252P/Linear. The image was made digitally using. Stellarium as the sky background. Whenever there is a chance to see a recently discovered comet, I want to try. There is a web page I use to check once in a while to see what comets are available for us stargazers: cometchasing. I finally caught 252P/Linear, with the binoculars, after some previous failed tries with the telescope. It was in the same FOV with low magnification. There are two more co...

Polluted Skies stargazing: M57, Planetary Nebula in Lyra
http://pollutedskiesstargazing.blogspot.com/2016/11/m57-planetary-nebula-in-lyra.html
Thursday, November 10, 2016. M57, Planetary Nebula in Lyra. A star that exploded some time after the majestic Egyptian pyramids were made left a magnificent shell of ionized gas larger than the orbit of the Trans-Neptunian objects in our own solar system. That orbit is where some unknown and known dwarf planets like the old pal Pluto, survive far away from the sun. Lyra constellation vs 15x70 Celestron Skymaster FOV (sketch). Edited by Jennifer Steinberg (editor in chief). November 17, 2016 at 8:03 AM.

Polluted Skies stargazing: The Grus quartet
http://pollutedskiesstargazing.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-grus-quartet.html
Saturday, December 17, 2016. Only 2 degrees east from to the Crane’s body, there is a lovely association of interacting galaxies known as The Grus Quartet. A semi-urban sky and good transparency are enough to catch a glimpse of this group, at least in a 6” telescope. Edited by Jennifer Steinberg (editor in chief). December 19, 2016 at 5:10 PM. December 26, 2016 at 2:25 PM. Gracias Sergio por tus comentarios. Te deseo una feliz navidad y bienvenido el nuevo año 2017! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Monday, February 15, 2016. Red dot finderscope update. This is the red dot finderscope that comes with the Celestron Astromaster 130EQ. Is not a secret that it is a nightmare for beginners and hated by experienced amateur astronomers to the point that many of them refer to it as junk or useless. Let’s start with the process…. Set of Allen keys phillips,. Screwdriver, tape, tape measure or ruler,. Pencil and drill with metal drill bits. 2 Disassembling the scope. Internal edge that keeps the. To take apar...

Polluted Skies stargazing: September 2016
http://pollutedskiesstargazing.blogspot.com/2016_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 30, 2016. Filling out the Messier Catalog Album. In astronomy, the first album most of us would like to complete is the Messier Catalog: 110 deep sky objects that will keep our eyes entertained for a life time. One can see the whole list in one night but that does not mean than one won´t want to see them again in the future. I finally have both completed: my Natural History album and the 110 Mesier List so I guess it is time to move to a new and likely harder list. Below is the spre...

Polluted Skies stargazing: April 2016
http://pollutedskiesstargazing.blogspot.com/2016_04_01_archive.html
Friday, April 29, 2016. Is it unachievable to Bino-viewers? Probably as old as the wheel itself, this planetary nebula could be the Achilles heel for new stargazers anxious to complete the whole Messier List. In my experience, this is one of the toughest objects to see, especially with a bright sky or bad transparency. As soon as I had a chance, I tried with my telescope under my usual Bortle 5 skies. With only 37.5 of magnification and an excellent transparency it was easy peasy. I did not s...With bino...

Alexander's Astronomy Sketching
Tuesday, 18 August 2015. Unveiling the Veil - part II. The Veil Nebula really starts coming into its own as aperture increases. With the 17.5” scope, the filamentary structures within the nebulosity begin to resolve. Mottling, or variations in density of illumination, are easier to pick up. And wispy, soft extensions of the ends of the nebulous cloud seem to keep extending on and on. The Veil looked to be ablaze! Object: Easter section of the Veil Nebula. Scope: 17.5” Karee push-pull dob. This last week ...
