Coastal Garden — Hamish Moorhead Landscapes

A significant house rebuild presented the opportunity to rethink the layout and use of an existing seaside garden. The traditional front lawn and boundary fence were scrapped in favour of using the topography and planting to blur the boundary between the garden and harbour. Timber decking and permeable paving extend from the house to merge with constructed sand dunes and a path that descends through native coastal planting to the waterfront. Relocating the driveway from the north to the south side of this Hawkes Bay farmhouse allowed the garden to be redesigned to create space for new outdoor living areas, while making the most of the established garden. A courtyard and swimming pool replace the old driveway, creating a progression of spaces that connect the house to the original front lawn, tennis court and paddocks beyond. Designed as a weekend retreat, the garden around this contemporary Martinborough home draws on the simple lines of the architecture and provides a connection between the house and its park-like surroundings. Clipped evergreen hedges ensure a year round back drop of greenery, and groups of specimen trees frame views across the surrounding landscape. The pared back planting and simple palette of materials create a restful setting around the house and keep maintenance requirements low.

Renovations to this Wellington home included significant earthworks at the rear of the property to create a new garden that captures the sun and is protected from the wind. The architecture and materials of the house extend into the garden with a palette of weathered timber, concrete, and white plaster. A new home in a residential estate in Martinborough gave the opportunity to create a garden from scratch. With wind protection and privacy in mind, a structured framework of hedging was planted to create a series of partitioned ‘rooms’ within the garden. This elevated Eastbourne site with expansive views of Wellington Harbour is flanked on two sides by native bush and natural streams falling from the surrounding hills. These characteristics create a micro-climate in which subtropical plants thrive, presenting an exciting design opportunity to combine the unique site, contemporary architecture of the house, and the renovated natural form swimming pool. Murdoch James Estate Wines near Martinborough straddles a dramatic escarpment that separates the upper and lower terrace of the vineyard. The winery buildings sit above the escarpment overlooking a pond and willow-lined creek. The design challenge was to plant the dry, crumbly bank, while providing a visual and physical connection between the upper and lower levels. Local stone used in gabion baskets stabilises the base of the bank and defines the semi-circular lower lawn.
