I'm very interested in the way it alters the viewer's relationship with the depicted space, and its potential for describing an almost blinding light. I'm also exploring the moment when a cluster of abstract marks becomes an illusion of space.

Savoy Series - 2007. Click on each image to enlarge. The Savoy Series began with drawings made over several weeks close to Savoy pier and Cleopatra’s needle on the bank of the Thames. I have the feeling, especially when by the Thames, that our ever expanding urban environment is precariously poised between the creation of a spectacular human achievement and an enormous disaster from which it could never recover.

Click on each image to enlarge. Whilst I was drawing in the Collins' flat in Dalston Square. They generously invited me to stay in their family home by the coast in Hampshire. I was very interested to find out how I would respond to a rural landscape after spending so much time focussing on urban environments. I wanted to begin to find out how we interact with contemporary rural landscapes both as physical spaces and as images.

Looking out onto the vast scale and relentless builtup-ness of London from the top of the Shard felt almost like gazing onto a spectacular natural landscape, bringing back memories of an earlier trip to the mountains in Austria. This series of images explores the relationship between the act of looking and the experience of space in both urban and natural environments.
