Stretched Head - Alexis Demetriades Scientific Illustration

Muscles of the Neck. Completed for The Smithsonian Institution. This head is made of human skin which was first stuffed with clay and then smoked and ornamented. It was collected on a 1929 sugarcane expedition to Papua New Guinea and is featured in a National Geographic of that year. I was asked to paint it due to the sensitive nature of displaying human remains, and to emphasize some of the subtle detail that may have been lost on film.

Muscles of the Neck. Joseph Gingerich at The Smithsonian gave me the opportunity to draw my first stone tool. He described the point as follows:. This point was found near Intervale, New Hampshire. It is one of largest and most complete points ever found representing the Michaud-Neponset/Barnes fluted point type. This point type dates between 10,200 10,300 radiocarbon years BP. Or 12,200-12,300 years ago. The point is made from Munsungun Chert a lithic source over 200 miles away.

Muscles of the Neck. Dwarf Coconut Hunting Amulets. Watercolor and gouache 2012. Drawn from the collection of the Pitt Rivers Anthropology Museum in Oxford for The Smithsonian Institution. Dwarf coconuts were carved with 'grotesque faces' to represent the spirits housed inside them, and they were used as objects of great power during hunting. They were collected in the early 1900s.
