Hill Junkie: January 2015
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Weston Worlds, 2015 Opener. Wednesday, January 14, 2015. The Tuesday night crit-on-snow race series. Has begun at Weston on the Leo J. Martin golf course. A large group showed up Tuesday, despite frigid temp, with over 80 racers between the A and B fields. With conditions marginally sketchy after a full day of activities on the course, I pondered for a moment if I shouldn't race in the slower B group. Hard packed conditions brings out the worst in my weak technique. After a large gap opened, a few more s...

Hill Junkie: November 2014
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 14, 2014. Then a couple weeks later, I noticed a very subtle bump in the drivetrain when hammering in a smaller cogs. Running the chain through my hand on the bike stand, I didn't see or feel anything odd. Yet the subtle bump persisted. It didn't skip or anything, like it was earlier with the tight link. You just could feel something wasn't quite right in the chain. Then one morning before work, I was throwing some lube on and something caught my eye. A link was missing a roller! With T-...

Two Adventures: The End
http://twoadventures.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-end.html
Two wheels, two skis, two feet, two-strokes, two people (two kitties). Monday, December 30, 2013. I am a voracious reader, but still am sad and even melancholy to a degree when I reach the end of a good novel. I'm always left wondering what happened to the characters next, even if the author managed to tie everything up well before the ending. Day 1 Worlds - MUD! We went to Louisville. Where Mike managed to best the worst racing conditions. Some projects for friends. In July. It was the hottest week ...

Two Adventures: April 2013
http://twoadventures.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Two wheels, two skis, two feet, two-strokes, two people (two kitties). Thursday, April 11, 2013. I've been realizing more and more why it is that I like (love? To race my bike. Yes, I love to ride. Yes, I love to push myself as hard as possible on the bike. Yes, I like the sense of accomplishment. Yes, I like the rewards that hopefully result (though the disappointment is often bitter, it is still a learning experience for the next time! This past weekend was the first race in the Root 66 Race Series.

Hill Junkie: September 2014
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Monday, September 29, 2014. Did over two weeks fly by without a post? My 10 days in Colorado is already a distant memory. Races were always good for blog fodder. Without trips and races, what is there to talk about here? Stellar weather was on tap for Sunday. Lining up for 6:05am start, it wasn't even cold out. Most years there is frost on the ground or it is raining. Staying hydrated was a bigger concern, as temps were expected to rise above 80F later in the day. I was on the hairy cusp of total crampin...

Hill Junkie: May 2014
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Monday, May 26, 2014. I really needed a solid ride this weekend that didn't involve hypothermia. I was too tired Sunday to do much of a ride after Saturday's debacle in rain, hail and mud. So that left today. Wouldn't you know it, it was raining again when I got up. That wasn't supposed to happen. Fire the weather men and women. We need forecasters that forecast good weather and make it stick! That gave me the creeps, just like the little girl from the movie Poltergeist when she says "They're Here! We ma...

Hill Junkie: March 2015
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, March 29, 2015. I've discussed "double-dipping" here before, some time ago. It's always been in the context of refusing to let go of the cycling season as the transition to snow sports begins. Well, this year I suffer from the malady on the other side of the pendulum swing. It is hard to let go of the Nordic ski season. Yep, that will put you in a hole. Or how about 4000ft of solo threshold work on the bike on Friday, then hit sticky snow on skate skis with two others on Saturday. That wo...I'll ...

Hill Junkie: August 2015
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 29, 2015. In its third year, I finally had no schedule conflict to participate in the Kearsarge Hillclimb Race. I've climbed Mt Kearsarge many times by bike over the years, so I was intimately familiar with its undulating profile. That profile would make for some interesting race dynamics. Lining up, I didn't see my nemesis Erik Vandendries. Maybe I had a shot at a 50 win. A friend noted that the men's 50 age group was over 25% of the pre-registered riders! Could have gone either way....

Hill Junkie: J.A.M. Fund Grand FUNdo
http://hilljunkie.blogspot.com/2015/07/jam-fund-grand-fundo.html
Jam Fund Grand FUNdo. Monday, July 27, 2015. Saturday was a perfect day to join 300 other like-minded riders for some dirt road fun. I participated in this fund raising ride. Once before in 2011. This year's course featured new sections. When my friend Brett expressed interest, I couldn't think of a better way to get my weekend fix in. I'll let the photos portray how the day went. Starting out with police escort. Lead group at first food stop. No rush to get back on bikes. Timmy playing on the rocks.
