Not in a Long Time. January 11, 2014. So this is more of a list. One that will grow as it occurs to me… damn I haven’t done that in a really long time. I’ll update this as they come up. Some of these, I’ve done here or there, but in general in the past 13 years in Tokyo I haven’t…. Taken a shower standing up. Had an American bank account. Had a US phone number. Worked in an office with more than one or two other non-Asians, if any. Attended a work meeting in English. Read an American newspaper. January 1...

Except for some brief forays into stand-up in university and while… Continue reading →. January 15, 2014. January 11, 2014.

It’s What’s for Dinner | tokyocooney
https://tokyocooney.wordpress.com/2014/03/04/its-whats-for-dinner
It’s What’s for Dinner. March 4, 2014. I need to rant a little about this. To be clear about this, I LOVE JAPANESE FOOD. But I get so tired of Japanese people talking about it. A friend of mine passed on a link to an interesting, translated article written by a woman who had lived in the US and shared her advice. 8221; Yeah, Haagen Dazs makes you fat by making ice cream too delicious. Or fish and chips? Hich, basically, is exactly the same as every other udon noodle soup. One of the things they seem ...

You Are Just American. January 27, 2014. I was raised to be a proud Irish-American. Bagpipe lessons and step dancing, shamrocks and an shillelaghs were a constant presence in my youth. On St Patrick’s Day of course myself and the Irishly named O’Connors, O’Briens, MaGees and others took special pride in our heritage. We weren’t just any Americans, we were “Irish-Americans.”. As I celebrated St. Patricks day in Japan a local would inevitably ask, “So you’re Irish? 8220;So where are you from? I’m a t...

Goin’ Down South. February 3, 2014. I never went to Disneyland, but spent weeks in gorgeous places like Yellowstone, Glacier and the Badlands. It was awesome. As a teen I went on a 50 day cross country trip with classmates that took me to nearly every state. After university I drove solo cross country twice. There is really no location I find more comforting and enjoyable than the distance covered between two places. I went to the Sanja Matsuri. As my knowledge of Japan grew, I’d say in some ways I...

American Joke | tokyocooney

January 18, 2014. I was reading a magazine in the dentists office, a place ripe for comedy. I came across an article. 8221; It was a way for my mostly foreign audience to blow off some steam and say “Oh my god, he is right! My typical stand-up routine in Tokyo. You Are Just American. 4 thoughts on “ American Joke. March 16, 2015 at 9:59 am. January 26, 2014 at 8:52 pm. January 21, 2014 at 3:28 pm. Big in America | tokyocooney

January 15, 2014. It is easy to be big in Japan, because everything tends to be on the small side. But whether big is good or not I’m not so sure anymore. Not just within the home either. Cooking dinner and you realize you need more garlic? Supermarket and back in under 5 minutes. Nothing in the fridge? Grab a Dr. Pepper from the vending machine 20 paces from the front door. Don’t feel like cooking? There is a convenience store across the street. 8221; Simple answer, I just had less stuff. Big had always...
