Alex Warren Architecture | Interesting Books: Making sense of the Library of Babel

http://alexwarrenarchitecture3.blogspot.com/2011/02/making-sense-of-library-of-babel.html

Tuesday, 8 February 2011. Making sense of the Library of Babel. I started by building a 3D virtual model of the library. No modelling software or computer could deal with infinite hexagons so I have been selectively editing these images to make them appear infinite. The first view is a section cut looking down the infinite voids within each hexagon. The second image shows the vast expanse of hexagons all connecting to each other - this is the basic geometry, I have included no detail at this stage:.

Wednesday, 16 February 2011. Library of Babel Pin Up. For my pin up I have condensed all of my research into a few sheets of A1, starting off with a sectional perspective sketchup image showing the hexagrids:. There are no books on this render because my computer could not cope with all the data passing through it if each hexagon contained hundreds of books. My next two images show two perspectives of the interior of the library. The uniformness of the books adds to the feeling of infinity, and have ...

Alex Warren Architecture | Interesting Books: Archibald Leitch - Football Ground Designer

http://alexwarrenarchitecture3.blogspot.com/2010/10/archibald-leitch-early-football-ground.html

Tuesday, 19 October 2010. Archibald Leitch - Football Ground Designer. I really enjoyed reading 'Engineering Archie' by Simon Inglis (can be found here. A book that looks at some of the early football grounds designed by architect/engineer Archibald Leitch. One of the more interesting things about the book was that it was sponsored by the architects HOK Sport. The foreword by Rod Sheard (of HOK Sport) reads:. Quickly the book takes a sour turn. A few of Leitch's stadiums had disasters, involving coll...

Alex Warren Architecture | Interesting Books: Architectural Graphics: Francis D.K. Ching

http://alexwarrenarchitecture3.blogspot.com/2010/10/architectural-graphics-francis-dk-ching.html

Monday, 25 October 2010. Architectural Graphics: Francis D.K. Ching. I could have scanned every page in this book. Ching's drawings are excellent, informative and are usually self-explanatory. As a resource tool for university, the book is useful in ways such as explaining how to draw doors, windows and materials correctly; but it is also useful in stimulating the creative mind in terms of layout, and of different ways of drawing the same scene. The light building on dark background also helps render par...

Alex Warren Architecture | Building Visits: 'How's Leeds Arena doing?'

http://alexwarrenarchitecture.blogspot.com/2011/09/hows-leeds-arena-doing-i-hear-you-all.html

Saturday, 17 September 2011. How's Leeds Arena doing? Pictures below (you can see the noticeable change in steelwork during the 24 hour period between Thursday and Friday): Click to enlarge:. On another note it was refreshing to see so much development in Leeds on my walk up the city to the arena site. On approaching Leeds the Bauman Lyons scheme at Tower Works is beginning to take shape, with what I presume is the first phase of brick clad office space located next to the largest, most ornate tower.

Alex Warren Architecture | Architectural Interests: Successful but Unethical Architecture?

http://alexwarrenarchitecture2.blogspot.com/2010/11/successful-but-unethical-architecture.html

Monday, 8 November 2010. Successful but Unethical Architecture? I'm intrigued by two building projects featuring designing spaces for animals. One is a dog grooming centre designed by Square One Interiors, and the other an elephant house in Copenhagen Zoo, designed by Foster and Partners. Alex Warren Architecture | Building Visits: February 2011

http://alexwarrenarchitecture.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 16 February 2011. Wren's Library, Cambridge. When walking around potential design/building sites in Cambridge, we took a detour to Wren's Library. No photos were allowed in the library itself, so the internal images are taken from the University website. The first thing I noticed when approaching the building was that the entire ground floor seemed to have no purpose to it - giant stone columns support the library on the first floor above. Saturday, 26 February 2011. The Hierarchy and Control of Knowledge. After my studies of the Library of Babel ( http:/ alexwarrenarchitecture3.blogspot.com/. I watched 'The Name of The Rose', a film featuring a fictional library where books are controlled by the church. If the books contradicted the bible they were stored in a secret vault, a labyrinth, and were ultimately destroyed by the church to prevent people from ever reading the books. Intellectuals and non-intellectuals are on towers of very diffe...

Alex Warren Architecture | Design Studio Work: January 2011

http://alexwarrenarchitecture4.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Friday, 28 January 2011. Final Project Pin Up. This is the work I pinned up for my final music therapy centre design. I started off with the location of Serenella in its context of Murano, and Murano's context within Venice. Next my masterplan process, describing the Venetian proportions and ratios I used to map out the masterplan block surrounding my site:. I then showed my final masterplan layout in the context of Serenella:. My final volumetric layout within the masterplan:. The dark room door closes ...

Alex Warren Architecture | Design Studio Work: Final Review - Section

http://alexwarrenarchitecture4.blogspot.com/2011/05/final-review-section.html

Sunday, 8 May 2011. Final Review - Section. Because space is short on the presentation boards, I have included my early underground storage studies (wind cellars etc) and initial ideas on the left, followed by my hand drawing (see previous blog entry) showing the two principal subterranean spaces; and finally the basement/depository floor plan. I have shaded in areas of dark and light on both the 1:100 section and the 1:200 basement plan to indicate where the light pipes are. Final Review - Section.

Alex Warren Architecture | Design Studio Work: December 2010

http://alexwarrenarchitecture4.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, 30 December 2010. Music Therapy Centre 1. This blog entry features my pin-up music therapy centre proposal. The design of the building appears quite simple. the toilets/plant room are all stacked in the corner of the site, as is the circulation. The ground floor is public space, with a performance space that is open to the adjoining courtyard. The three therapy rooms are on the upper two levels, and have neighbouring one-way mirrors for observation of therapy sessions. Next to the staircase is ...

Alex Warren Architecture | Design Studio Work: Final Review Sheets

http://alexwarrenarchitecture4.blogspot.com/2011/05/final-review-sheets.html

Tuesday, 10 May 2011. For the final review I wanted to illustrate my design process from the initial library study through the design process into my final design. I have selected what I feel are my strongest images for the left column of the A0 sheet, showing my interpretation of Jorge Luis Borges's short story describing 'The Library of Babel'. Underneath this is a diagram showing my fundamental ideas behind the design - the control and hierarchy of knowledge. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Alex Warren Architecture | Design Studio Work: April 2011

http://alexwarrenarchitecture4.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, 17 April 2011. Interim Review, 14th April. For this pin up I wanted to show the whole design process from the early library study to my current design. This meant producing a sheet with the early images from my Library of Babel case study, as well as the Intuitive Response to it. This was followed by an image showing the site and a few precedent studies, all of which have been written about in my earlier blog entries. Showing how the basement floor plan works with the ground floor plan is importa...

Alex Warren Architecture | Design Studio Work: Summer Exhibition

http://alexwarrenarchitecture4.blogspot.com/2011/06/summer-exhibition.html

Saturday, 11 June 2011. I spent a couple of days finishing the Serenella masterplan, using CAD plans and sketchup models of the surrounding masterplan sections. I wish I'd had time to complete this model before the final exam. The 1:250 scale meant that the models were suitable for volumes - everyone had a 1:100 or 1:50 scale model of their individual schemes that were more detailed. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Alex Warren Architecture | Architectural Interests

Friday, 18 March 2011. Perhaps the most unique building mankind has built, I have always been interested in the International Space Station since I knew about its construction, until its recent 100% completion. Constructed in tiny segments at a time, the space station's design had to be meticulously planned - its components were designed to fit inside rockets and be easily assembled together by the astronauts 200 miles above the earth's surface. Wednesday, 22 December 2010. On the Welsh Bridge in my home...

He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life. During Alex’s first fight, he was dominating in the first round and then in the second round, Sawin got in a lucky shot which brought Alex to his knees, and soon after the bout was called with Sawin winning with a TKO. The tables turned on November 21, 2009, in Gadsden, Alabama, when Alex controlled the fight from the first bell. Seconds before the end of the first round, his opponent had had enough and Alex won by TKO.
