Alfaxan consists of the active ingredient alfaxalone in an aqueous solution with a pH of 6.5-7, and is registered for use in dogs and cats for both the induction and maintenance of anaesthesia. At induction, IV injection speed should result in the total dose, if required, being administered over a period of 60 seconds. Administer one quarter of the calculated dose every fifteen seconds, until the patient can be intubated. Premedication may result in significant dose requirement reduction. Maintenance doses of Alfaxan can be given as supplemental boluses or by constant rate infusion. Dose for constant rate infusion. 10 - 11 mg/kg/hour. 7 - 8 mg/kg/hour. 016 - 0.18 mg/kg/minute. 16 - 1.8 mg/kg.
