Alf Greenfield claimed the title of English Heavyweight boxing champion during a colourful career in which he fought John L. Sullivan for the World Heavyweight title. Born in on March 22nd 1853 at Russell Terrace Northampton, England, he was the eldest of three boys born to Morris Greenfield and Amelia Matthews. John L. Sullivan. One of the all time greats, John L. Sullivan was the premier fighter of his time. Alf fought him twice during a trip to the US in 1884 - 1885 and they became good friends after being arrested at the first fight. The case against them was dismissed after the police who stopped the spar testified that it was a very mild set to; nothing but a hugging match.
