A Library Story

Thoughts on librarianship, culture, Africa, and life. Uganda, Part 2. May 30th. That's our departure date. Or 'wheels up' as Brian says in military lingo. :). It's coming FAST. At this point there is plenty to do. But we are getting things crossed off our list one by one: paperwork, immunizations, etc. And, my excitement is growing. I look at pictures and realize: I am going to see some of these faces again! Here are just a few examples of the things that make this trip possible:. We are going back!

A Library Story: A Non-Library Story

http://alibrarystory.blogspot.com/2011/04/non-library-story.html

Thoughts on librarianship, culture, Africa, and life. Well, I suppose this is tangentially a library story since it takes place with Joshua, my colleague at RTC. But other than that it really has nothing to do with libraries. But I decided that every now and then it doesn't hurt to include a non-library story, right? Because, really, it's ALL part of my story here in Uganda. I found out later that occasionally other 'mzungus' go to the island but rarely do they take the public boats. They have there ...

A Library Story: Learning Life Lessons From Giving 'Free' Time

http://alibrarystory.blogspot.com/2013/03/learning-life-lessons-from-giving-free.html

Thoughts on librarianship, culture, Africa, and life. Learning Life Lessons From Giving 'Free' Time. The past few months I've been volunteering twice a week at a local non-profit. That helps African refugees and immigrants get settled here in the US. I love it! About living as a minority. To simply file papers. I could feel frustrated that I'm still looking for a job. And am spending my time doing this instead. I realized I was saying. I just wanted a job but when it came down to it I didn't want any.

A Library Story: To Keep or Not To Keep

http://alibrarystory.blogspot.com/2012/05/to-keep-or-not-to-keep.html

Thoughts on librarianship, culture, Africa, and life. To Keep or Not To Keep. Last year, soon after I started at RTC, I helped weed and sort through a huge collection of donated books. It was an interesting [read: frustrating] process. I wrote a short list. To friends in the US about making donations.reminding us all to make relevant donations. I know, all you non-librarians are thinking 'Seriously? You take classes in how to pick out books? And sometimes I just don't know. But being the big-picture thin...

A Library Story: Lessons Learned While Working Solo

http://alibrarystory.blogspot.com/2012/04/lessons-learned-while-working-solo.html

Thoughts on librarianship, culture, Africa, and life. Lessons Learned While Working Solo. As a Solo Librarian, there are no other professional librarians with whom I can discuss issues or changes at my library [at least for now.this will be changing very soon! So any changes become a bit scary, which is what I mean by learning to trust yourself. Can be a bit painful. [And maybe childish.]. I have learned so much. So, I guess as a Solo Librarian I'm learning that I can't do it all. [Who can? 8220;We live ...

A Library Story: Returning to Uganda

http://alibrarystory.blogspot.com/2015/03/returning-to-uganda.html

Thoughts on librarianship, culture, Africa, and life. We are going back! Yes, you read that right. Three years after I left Uganda (almost to the day), Brian and I will go back together. But let me back up. Here's our story:. As many of you know, I spent January 2011 - June 2012 living and working in Uganda. I was a librarian. Still captures so many emotions from my experiences.]. But eventually I found a job and life settled down. We made friends and I learned to navigate a new culture and city. Details...

Social Media is Outreach | the outreach librarian

https://theoutreachlibrarian.com/2015/06/10/social-media-is-outreach

Just another WordPress.com site. Social Media is Outreach. June 10, 2015. By the outreach librarian. If you don’t have Internet presence, it is sort of like you don’t exist. I know that if I go to an especially cool store or see an artist whose work I really like at a craft fair, I follow-up by looking for their website. If they don’t have one, it is really disappointing. What kind of professional are they if they don’t have social media? Moreover, it is possible that patrons want to be a part of the lib...

Just another WordPress.com site. Outreach to the incarcerated: practical considerations. June 3, 2015. By the outreach librarian. In Activities and Programs. I volunteer my library skills in a prison, but I was not interested in the prison program in library school. I admired, from afar, those who collected books for inmates or advocated for those in the juvenile justice system. My students got me interested in this population through their research into our justice system. Offering our skills and servic...

Hannah's Book Reviews

A blog, written by me. Saturday, August 15, 2015. A Distant Melody - Book Review. I finished Sarah Sundin's 'A Distant Melody' yesterday evening.and I adore it! I had pretty high hopes for this one, but I didn't expect it to be anywhere near as good as 'Through Waters Deep', one of my favorite books of 2015 so far. Boy, was I wrong! This book, was even BETTER than 'Through Waters Deep'. And that's saying a lot! Overall thoughts: This novel was absolutely beautiful! I didn't plan on finishing it in three ...
