Emily Hoile on Clarsach and Alice Burn on Northumbrian Smallpipes Emily studied pedal harp at Juilliard (New York) and Alice was a music student at the University of York when this EP was recorded. It was recorded ‘as live’ 2 days before Emily returned to America in August 2011. It gives a taste of their very fresh and innovative approach to the Northumbrian tradition. Alice is an experienced performer and loves sharing her music with an audience. Equally at home at a classical music concert or enjoying the fun of folk festivals, one of her favourite engagements is leading the St Aidan’s procession around Holy Island, close to her family home. Alice has played at many weddings and community gatherings; if you would like her to pipe at an event, please contact her for further details.

Now tell me about your interesting contraption. Alice is a Northumbrian piper from a farm in North Northumberland. Her love of the pipes and the music of the North East has offered her a wealth of performance opportunities and a chance to answer many interesting questions about her pipes including the one above, posed by an elderly lady. Alice has a First Class BA(Hons), music, from the University of York and a Masters in Musicology from Durham University.

Alice began the Northumbrian Smallpipes at the age of 8 and was later awarded a place at St. Mary’s Music School. She was the youngest to win a Northumbrian Piping Open Competition and at the age of 11, she travelled across New Zealand, performing with Northumbrian Smallpipers from around the world.
