This is what South Dakota looks like, for the most part. For a more authentic experience, stare at this photograph for the next seven or eight hours. Probably the most interesting sights along this stretch of I-90 were the billboards promoting roadside attractions, political messages, etc. They seemed less regulated in this regard than what is found in most states - perhaps in order to add interest to an otherwise flat and open landscape and keep drivers from falling asleep at the wheel!

National Bison Range

The National Bison Range. This photo doesn't do justice to the heavenly-looking real-life view I remember. An easy trail at one point along the drive takes visitors to the crest of a hill overlooking the valley pictured above. The bighorn sheep at left were apparently visiting a salt lick strategically stationed to attract wildlife within viewing range. But where were the 300-500 bison the range was named for?

It was near dusk and I decided I'd better turn in for the night so I pulled off at the nearest exit with a LODGING sign. .Reedpoint. It was this quaint little old Western town - a collection of wood frame houses, some cool-looking grain silos with peeling paint and a saloon with a noisy party going on inside and a sign saying Hotel Montana. I drove around the little town and couldn't find any other lodging so I parked in front of the noisy saloon, weary and hungry and ready to call it a night.

Here is a little town called. Not far from the campground where I stayed. Other travelers had also found their way into these parts. If you look closely in the photograph below, two women (whose car bore eastern license plates) are chatting with a local sitting on a picnic bench.
