Whilst in Tallinn we took the opportunity to also visit the city that was originally founded in 1550 by King Gustav of Sweden as a trading post to actually compete with Tallinn. At less than 2 hours away with the boat a visit to Helsinki was pretty to easy to combine with the Estonian capital. Notes from the lowlands. The musings of an Aussie in the Netherlands. The world of the hutong. Hutongs are a type of narrow street or alleyway and are most commonly found in Beijing. A hutong is actually an entire neighbourhood made up of a series of car-free alleyways containing traditional courtyard residences and are characteristic of "old" Beijing.
