Monday, May 4, 2009. Human, Nature, Image. The order of words for the title of this course are arranged in a hierarchy. It seems like a simple sequence but if I have learned anything from this class, it is that these words, and their relationships to one another, are anything but simple. We started the semester with a reading from Gary Snyder's book The Practice of the Wild. Roxy Paine's Maelstrom - a new sculpture that is on view on the roof of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. H u m a n / N a t u r e: Visualizing Space

http://allisongrantblog.blogspot.com/2009/04/visualizing-space.html

Monday, April 20, 2009. It was quite interesting to read about Werner Herzog's films the week after our section on truth in photography because I have always been struck by the triangulation of documentary, narrative and emotion that Herzog uses. The clip below, from the film Lessons In Darkness. Demonstrates what I am talking about. The scene below is also from Lessons In Darkness. And is, I believe, palpable when viewing the film. This is the tension within the film; a feeling of disorientation, of...

H u m a n / N a t u r e: After Nature? I don't know about that.

http://allisongrantblog.blogspot.com/2009/04/after-nature-i-dont-know-about-that.html

Sunday, April 26, 2009. I don't know about that. When the New Museum's exhibition After Nature came out last summer, the title made me an instant skeptic. I imaged a cryptic exhibition filled with exaggerated and only vaguely ominous works that aimed to define a trend within art that represented what we were all trying to prevent by using cloth bags at the grocery store. H u m a n / N a t u r e: March 2009

http://allisongrantblog.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 29, 2009. One of my favorite things about the television show Lost. Is that the entire plot is based on a fictive parallel universe that has descended from the remains of a failed 1970s scientific research collective. How cool is that? Still image from the television series Lost. Jack inside "The Sawn," an abandoned research facility. If we are to consider Fuller's legacy through its material rather than conceptual remnants, the portrayal of the geodesic dome on Lost. Monday, March 16, 2009.

H u m a n / N a t u r e: February 2009

http://allisongrantblog.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 20, 2009. The fact that artists use animals to metaphorically image their ideas isn't much of a revelation. That is why I found myself nodding off in boredom or frustrated at various points during this weeks reading, A Bird Tapestry. By David S. Rubin. Rubin spends nearly all of the 54 pages in the piece uncritically detailing works from Birdspace: A Post-Audubon Artists' Aviary. Note that these artists were all a part of the exhibition Birdspace: A Post-Audubon Artists' Aviary. Terrestr...

Human/Nature: Subhankar Banerjee - Week 10

http://lisahumannature.blogspot.com/2009/04/subhankar-banerjee-week-10.html

Monday, April 6, 2009. Subhankar Banerjee - Week 10. Over the last three years of grad school I think I have heard the question : Can a photograph/photographic series create change? 160;and hearing Mr. Banerjee's lecture. If anything I think that the reading and lecture raised as many, if not more  questions about the role/classification  of art, as it did issues of environmentalism. . Here are some of the statements / ideas that I found most compelling:. What is the goal of environmental art?

Sunday, February 22, 2009. Like a bird on the wire.-Week 5. R with a Parrot. In his essay A Bird Tapestry. Written for the Birdspace. Rubin suggests the reason for this is that people see birds as part of humanity, which leads back to the notion of biophilia.  In many ways the  Birdspace. Exhibition is a typology of Biophilia values, from humans utilitarian to negatvistic relationship with birds. . I also really enjoyed Annette Messager's series of stuffed sparrows swaddled in garments, entitled  Th...

Tuesday, April 14, 2009. Of Grass and Life. How potent can a physical point of view be? So I ask, when was nature missed, if not until it was basically eliminated from our lives? The reaction was "natural" to begin to address the fact that the landscape was being transformed and it no longer looked like before. The essay talks about desire, about constructing realities of one's desire, of Eden, with pleassure. I mean what a perfect description of a country club but a temple of selfish worship.
