Sunday, August 26, 2007. A taste of rural Senegal.(as well as inside a daara in Dakar). These albums include photos from both the daara in Dakar where we have been filming talibes for our documentary as well as 2 villages where we spent the last 1-2 weeks interviewing the parents of talibes who have sent their children to live in the cities where they beg in the streets in order to collect money for the marabout who then uses the money to pay rent, bills, provide for his own family, etc.

I have no idea what i'm getting myself into, which makes me a bit nervous, but it also kinda makes it more of an adventure. I'm so glad that i'll have Jamie with me! I've talked with some of the other people who are going and they seem awesome! As far as I can tell, it's going to be a great semester. I'll miss you guys! It was so much fun!

Sunday, November 28, 2004. Self Conscious in Senegal. So I am here in Thies working on my independ. project, and things are going great! I have visited about 15 daaras (the run down shacks where the little talibe kids live under the 'supervision' of their marabout (islamic religious leader) . It has been crazy! Yesterday I went to a daara that had 83 talibe and ONE Marabout! Can you imagine being responsible for all those kids! Plus, can you imagine how much money this marabout is getting from the talibe?

Sunday, August 26, 2007. I bought a moto today! It’s red and the perfect size for me. I’m really excited to drive it around town and explore different neighborhoods. Hopefully Cathi (volunteer) will be getting one soon too, so we can have our own little bike gang. I realize this purchase was totally spontaneous and a little reckless but, I think it will be something fun, new, and different when it comes to spicing up ma vie Thiesoise. Vroom Vroom! Oh well. Not much I can do now! Wedding party comes in (A...

Thursday, August 02, 2007. The heat Jerry, the heat! Good ol' Thies (hometown here in Senegal) is currently experiencing 89% relative humidity. Not cool. I'm soaked in sweat around the clock. I think I'm going to die a heat-related death. Here's what good ol' Wikapedia has to say about it. The human body sheds heat by a combination of evaporation of perspiration, heat conduction. To the surrounding air, and thermal radiation. And other internal organs. Anyone up for a little vacation to somewhere cold?

Tuesday, July 31, 2007. Film Project and Terrential Rains.(tid-bits taken from my journal). I can’t get over how amazing this last week has been! Since I’ve stepped off the plane, I’ve been 100% immersed in the daara/talibe life. This documentary project has gotten me so plugged in, I can’t even begin to explain how great it is! We got up this morning around 7 to go to the daara I’m pooped! Ps crazy to think that my first Fulbright diary entry took place almost exactly a year ago! This documentary has gi...
