http://allwrite-gibtalk.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
A blog about writing and being a writer in Gibraltar. Here I jot down my thoughts about the craft and art of writing, Gibraltar and its surrounds, and how place and people inspire me to write. May | 2009 | Letters From Gibraltar
https://lettersfromgib.wordpress.com/2009/05
Archive for May, 2009 Monthly archive page. 24 hours without Landaluce. On May 29, 2009. I’m worried about Jose Ignacio Landaluce. It’s been over a day since we last heard from him and I fear something bad has happened. Is he OK? Has something gone wrong? A Spanish journo friend offered some words of comfort. “Don’t worry,” she told me. “He sent two press releases out on Thursday. That’s good for two days.”. Or sovereignty, or those troublesome waters around the Rock. Does he really believe what he says?
2009 | Letters From Gibraltar
https://lettersfromgib.wordpress.com/2009
Archive for 2009 Yearly archive page. On July 25, 2009. I have mixed feelings about this swine flu thing. I’m not sure whether to laugh or cry, worry or take the mickey. It’s partly because of the mixed signals we get. Reassurance on the one hand, doomsday scenarios on the other. But in the same breath he’s talking about containment strategies, about the need for strict hygiene to avoid infection, about vulnerable groups most at risk, about huge numbers getting sick. The health minister the other day and...
December | 2008 | Letters From Gibraltar
https://lettersfromgib.wordpress.com/2008/12
Archive for December, 2008 Monthly archive page. From Gib to Somalia…part III. On December 16, 2008. The Associated Press ran an interesting story. On Somali pirates this week, looking at the international networks that support the groups doing the actual hijacking at sea. This is a subject that I covered in some detail in a story for Lloyd’s List a couple of months ago, when I looked at ransom payments and how this business actually works in practice. But details as to how these groups operate are scant.
Braced for flu. | Letters From Gibraltar

On July 25, 2009. I have mixed feelings about this swine flu thing. I’m not sure whether to laugh or cry, worry or take the mickey. It’s partly because of the mixed signals we get. Reassurance on the one hand, doomsday scenarios on the other. 8220;Comparing flu’s with flu’s, this is a pretty mild illness,” said one doctor I spoke to recently. “Some people may have already had it and thought it was nothing more than a bad summer cold.”. Frankly, it’s all rather daunting. The health minister the other day ...
All set. | Letters From Gibraltar
https://lettersfromgib.wordpress.com/2009/07/18/all-set
On July 18, 2009. Against all odds and right up to the wire, the governments of Gibraltar, the UK and Spain have managed to pull it off. The stage is now set for a historic event, the first time a Spanish foreign minister will set foot in Gib in an official capacity. Miguel Angel Moratinos will fly into Malaga or Jerez before driving down to Gib for lunch with the UK’s David Miliband and Chief Minister Peter Caruana. Then a short press conference and it’s over. 9654; One Response. As such we are, IMO, wi...
June | 2009 | Letters From Gibraltar
https://lettersfromgib.wordpress.com/2009/06
Archive for June, 2009 Monthly archive page. Time to change Parliament. On June 30, 2009. Every time I cover a session in Parliament, I come away with a bad taste in my mouth. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I know there has to be a better way of conducting our public affairs in a place as small as Gib. How many see our politicians in action in the debating chamber? It’s a pity, because it’s an eye opener. Mostly the sessions are boring, but occasionally things flare up into lively, sometimes ...

It might have been an echo. Edited by Jackie Anderson. Attachment from Jackie Anderson. Oh, for Orange Blossoms. Edited by Jackie Anderson. Attachment from Jackie Anderson. The Deep Green Sea. It might have been an echo. I sense the excitement of the military nature of the place, where the flagstones of old barracks, now walkways for the public, still echo with the ring of hobnail boots, and the whisper of ancient orders, once hollered, now linger in the dark hollows of the galleries. If you enjoy what y...
January | 2009 | Letters From Gibraltar
https://lettersfromgib.wordpress.com/2009/01
Archive for January, 2009 Monthly archive page. On January 29, 2009. The International Transport Workers’ Federation communicated some sad news for seafararers around the globe today. Konstantin Metelev, chief mate on the Coral Sea, died earlier this month in hospital. He had been detained for a year along with two other officers after Greek authorities found drugs in the cargo on their ship. They were all cleared last year but Metelev was too ill to return home. On January 26, 2009. Moroccan and Spanish...
About that visit… | Letters From Gibraltar
https://lettersfromgib.wordpress.com/2009/07/22/about-that-visit
About that visit…. On July 22, 2009. I’m not going to write in any detail about yesterday’s visit to Gibraltar by Miguel Angel Moratinos, Spain’s foreign affairs minister. Acres of copy have already been published about this trip in English. And if you want to read the official statement in detail, you can do it here. Also worth watching is this astounding attack. On Moratinos by Pedro J. Ramirez, editor of El Mundo…). Well, fine, but Gibraltar will never be Spanish against the wishes of its people.
