By this time, we felt rather confident on the water. We had a lot of the Mississippi under our belts, and we were becoming familiar with commercial traffic. We knew the difference between a boat pushing eight barges and a boat pushing 16. And so we got a bit bolder. As we neared the freighter, I had more reason to question my judgment. Oh, this is going to be bigger than I bargained for. The freighter was bearing down at about 15 knots, and that’s a view you don’t want to see.

Ten fishing buddies accepted Skipper Dickson's invitation to cast off in a 30-year-old houseboat for a 400-mile trip across the heart of Louisiana. Skipper Dickson Jr. Of Shreveport, Louisiana, helped establish the 70,000-acre Tensas National Wildlife Refuge in 1980 and served as founding chairman of The Nature Conservancy of Louisiana. Numerous conservationist awards honor his work with the Red River Wetlands Coalition, Tensas Conservancy Coalition, Keep Kisatchie Coalition, Ducks Unlimited, and the Louisiana Wildlife Federation.
