Paul's 2010 Alpine Challenge: Day 8 – Arolla to Evolene (rejoining the trail)

http://alpinechallenge.blogspot.com/2010/07/day-8-arolla-to-evolene-rejoining-trail.html

Paul's 2010 Alpine Challenge. Trek across Switzerland - from Chamonix to the Austrian Border. Sunday, 18 July 2010. Day 8 – Arolla to Evolene (rejoining the trail). After recovering from the last few days in the heat of the valley - a straightforward day that allowed me to rejoin the planned route following the challenges of the high passes – 2 of which were unpassable solo due to the snow. Gentle paths all the way, tracing and retracing the river, saving energy levels for a challenging day tomorrow.

Paul's 2010 Alpine Challenge: Day 5 - Cabane de Louvie to Cabane de Prafleuri (?)

http://alpinechallenge.blogspot.com/2010/07/day-5-cabane-de-louvie-to-cabane-de.html

Paul's 2010 Alpine Challenge. Trek across Switzerland - from Chamonix to the Austrian Border. Sunday, 11 July 2010. Day 5 - Cabane de Louvie to Cabane de Prafleuri (? Early start. Up just before 6 after dreadful nights sleep in the dorm - why does the snorer always sleep near me? Must be the altitude. My walking colleague is still suffering from a bad cold and has decided to revert to the valley to allow us to rendezvous in a few days. Some typical paths – red and white flashes mark the route:. Cutting ac...

Paul's 2010 Alpine Challenge: Challenges – the weather

http://alpinechallenge.blogspot.com/2010/08/challenges-weather.html

Paul's 2010 Alpine Challenge. Trek across Switzerland - from Chamonix to the Austrian Border. Sunday, 15 August 2010. Challenges – the weather. The weather this year has been a big issue in the southern alps. Far more storms than usual, and a mix of weather patterns – all involving instability – which makes the routes very risky through high passes. The normal pattern is for 4-5 days of stability, building to a storm, clearing and returning to stability. Leaving only narrow windows of clear each day.

Paul's 2010 Alpine Challenge: Belated (brief) Update

http://alpinechallenge.blogspot.com/2010/08/belated-brief-update.html

Paul's 2010 Alpine Challenge. Trek across Switzerland - from Chamonix to the Austrian Border. Sunday, 15 August 2010. Apologies to all for the belated update. Part computer issues, part other issues…. Many pictures to follow but not from my current web connection. From the last posting in Cabane de Moiry - the route took the following course:. Gruben St Niklaus – with the planned route impassable due to the weather (heavy storms from noon),. we took an unusual variant down through the valley &#...Zermatt...

Paul's 2010 Alpine Challenge: July 2010

Paul's 2010 Alpine Challenge. Trek across Switzerland - from Chamonix to the Austrian Border. Sunday, 18 July 2010. Day 9 – Evolene to Cabane de Moiry. Altitude gain: 2100m (! Altitude loss: 600m / Distance: 21km Time: 7.5hrs. The most challenging day in terms of ascent and descent today – quite a physically hard day. Up early to ensure we climbed in the cool, an initial 3km along the valley was followed by a 1600m (4800ft) of steady ascent up the valley walls over about 7km. Pausing again to recover sug...

Dav's bit o the web. General optimism, in a mild and British sort of way. Raspberry Pi Ultrasound Sonar Range Sensing. SRF02 sensor. About the size of 20p. I’ll gloss over how sonar works to try to keep this article on topic, but Wikipedia has a good diagram of Active Sonar. And Devantech have a practical FAQ on using their modules. Enable the kernel modules ‘i2c bcm2708’ and ‘i2c dev’ by commenting out that line in /etc/modprobe.d/raspi-blacklist.conf. Once we’ve wired up our sensor, it should sho...

Dav's bit o the web. General optimism, in a mild and British sort of way. Homemade salted caramel and honeycomb ice cream. Homemade salted caramel and honeycomb ice cream. Homemade Salted Caramel and Honeycomb ice cream. Spring is finally here! Lambs are gambolling in the field, birds are tweeting and the sun is actually casting a shadow, so that means it’s time for another batch of ice cream. This isn’t the first time I’ve made salted caramel ice cream. You’ll need a handful of crushed up honeycomb.

Raspberry Pi Infrared Range Sensing | Dav's bit o the web

Dav's bit o the web. General optimism, in a mild and British sort of way. Raspberry Pi Infrared Range Sensing. The ultrasound range sensor I’m using has a minimum range of about 16cm, but I thought it would be interesting for my robot to sense objects more closely than that. Sharp have a range of three Infrared Range sensors. That are very popular and fairly easy to interface to a Raspberry Pi. I’ve chosen the GP2D120 because it’s got a supported range of 4cm to 30cm. As well as its rated minimum, typica...

Dav's bit o the web. General optimism, in a mild and British sort of way. Rivers of London, Ben Aaronovitch. Police action, personal adventure, old school magic, a smattering of romance, and a 1960s Jag driven over 100mph through central London make for a heady mix of science and magic in Rivers of London. This is Ben Aaronovitch. His universe has some simple and unique ideas that I think set it apart from other police procedural dramas, such a modern twist on elemental spirits and incorporating some int...

Digital cameras and memory card speeds | Dav's bit o the web

Dav's bit o the web. General optimism, in a mild and British sort of way. Digital cameras and memory card speeds. Digital cameras often have a rapid shoot mode, where they take still photographs as quickly as they can. I always thought that the maximum rate was limited by the camera’s internal hardware, but after reading Jeff Atwood’s comments on modern USB Flash drive performance. I wondered how significant the memory card’s speed is. Left: old and busted. Right: new hotness. Are generally rated as Clas...

Easy Caramel and Honeycomb Ice Cream | Dav's bit o the web

Dav's bit o the web. General optimism, in a mild and British sort of way. Easy Caramel and Honeycomb Ice Cream. Salted Caramel and Honeycomb Ice Cream. This recipe was inspired by something I read in Olive Magazine earlier on this year, having half a can of Carnation Caramel spare was just the excuse I needed to get around to making it up. Easy isn’t always bad, though, this resulted in a very soft scoop and an intense, almost popcorn-like flavour that met with popular acclaim. Makes 500ml of ice cream.
