Monday, February 27, 2012. Posted January 2, 2012. It is a few minutes before midnight New Years Eve in. And we are in our hotel room watching CCTV’s New Years Eve special featuring Michael Bolton (bet you wondered what ever happened to him) and hosted by a guy who looks amazingly like Dick Clark. We went downtown earlier to the main public celebration but saw a possible transportation problem in that tens of thousands of people were pouring into the area via subway but the subways stop running at 11 pm.

Monday, February 27, 2012. Contrary to stereotype, the food, at least in this region, is not spicy. In fact, we sometimes have to ask them to add more spice to our food. Two things I am eating less of here than at home are rice (available but not ubiquitous) and ginger (available for purchase raw but not noticeably used in restaurant cooking). And, of course, coffee, which is rare and very expensive. There is bread (but no butter). There is also a huge junk food industry. There is not a lot of meat.

On Thursday we attended the International Student Talent show and the lone American (in the show and in the Chinese International Education Program), a guitar playing blond freshman with dreadlocks, came in second. Then on Friday, Mary Jo was out shopping when she came across an older man who appeared to have been just hit by a car and was unable to move. She however, returned with a cell phone.

Monday, February 27, 2012. Posted on November 2. Part 5 (November 1). I have been reading a book intended for foreigners visiting. That explains American culture and values and why Americans behave the way they do. In Al’s case it’s a frustration with the imbalance between the meticulously cared for outdoor spaces and the condition of the classroom buildings, which may go years without either cosmetic or protective maintenance. Maybe it was a janitor’s holiday. We, of course, will not actually drink.

This on top of the lost key and washing-machine-that-wouldn’t-stop episodes we had the day before we left.
