Hurdy Gurdy History
http://www.altarwind.com/hghistory.htm
Hurdy Gurdies have had many shapes over the years: You can see from the illustration (left) the various shapes they have taken. While initially used in churches before they had organs (around 1,100 a.d., in northern France), It didn't take too long before street musicians used hurdy gurdies in folk music. The very earliest medieval hurdy gurdies were box shaped. Pictured right is an antique from the mid 1800's. The owner was very gracious in allowing me to make detailed notes and pictures. In the 1960's,.
The La Priel
http://www.altarwind.com/lapriel.htm
This delightful instrument is designed to evoke the decorative ornamentation of traditional French instruments. With it's delicately inlaid keybox lid and wheelcover, to the ornate rose art on the soundboard, keybox lid and wheel cover, this instrument is a work of art. This gurdy goes beyond the traditional 6 string arrangement with an extra added chantrelle (melody string). The sound of this instrument is incredibly dynamic, indredibly sweet, and very resonant. The Hurdy Gurdy, called Vielle à Roue. In French and Drehleier. At right is the magnificent medieval Symphonie. A hurdy gurdy built for me by George and Anwyn Leverett at Altarwind.com. It has two melody strings, two drone strings and no trompette or "buzzing bridge". This style of hurdy gurdy is commonly depicted in iconography of the 10th through the 15th centuries. We use it for our earliest music. It has a sweet, quieter tone than the larger Bosch instrument, which does have a trompette. Tuning where...

Jerry Hughes - Hurdy Gurdy

Considered to have originated in the east, it dates back 800 years or so, and has been at home both in the streets among itinerant musicians and in the courts of European nobles. Contemporary musicians throughout the world, but perhaps especially in Europe (e.g. Matthias Loibner. Among many others) have embraced the instrument and pushed its playing techniques, making it more versatile, complex, rich and strange. My instrument, built by George Leverett. 3 The Race to Doune.

I wanted to thank you for everything, the gurdy is fantastic! You've gone far and above all of my expectations. The instrument sounds and looks great. The artwork is awesome, the craftsmanship is superb, and the electronics sound so cool!
