A step towards more ecological home design and construction. Forecast: 100% chance of Heavy and Progressive Flurries. In the later shot above you can see the big pile(s) of earth from Cardrona Valley (the same material used for the rammed earth walls) in the bottom, which is the fill for the Super Adobe / earthbag retaining and landscaping walls on the street side of the home (pictures farther down in this post). And here is a view from the back of the house. Here are some of the window frames that will ...

A step towards more ecological home design and construction. MrOlympia Type of Oil-Down. Right next to the door is the Jarrah post that supports the triangular sod-roof section over the front door. After a quick sand down we applied a coat of half Turpentine, half boiled Linseed oil, and boy was it thirsty. Now it looks like a piece of art. Thanks for tuning in and look for the next time-lapse installment from the street side view coming soon to an altshiftnz.com site near you. PEACE.

A step towards more ecological home design and construction. Tune Tuesday #5-History Repeating. Posted by AltShift Team. Adventure in NZ is magnetic! With more mud to shape and absorb, both men are back on-site today, continuing with their earthbuilding projects. Along with the V.D.B. you can also see the white conduit for the electrical outlets (also implanted in the wall) on the left, and some black rebar on the right which connects the footing to the top of the eventual concrete bond beam. A step towards more ecological home design and construction. ROOF Appears and New Swirls Begin. Life on the ecoBuild site is like a swirl of red wine in a glass . . . and now, the wolf is away from the front door. Roof energy has made a change from the open - the vulnerable - the exposed to the sheltered. Sitting within the growing abode today during light rains offered protection and comfort . . .just what the straw bales were waiting for. Check out the mortise and tenon and joint action on the corners!

A step towards more ecological home design and construction. With film showings of the classic "Fern Gully" and a recent deforestation documentary entitled "The Burning Season", many people from the local community participated in the festivities. Here the beautiful and talented AltShiftNZ (Tom, Diana, Trent, Diane, and Roarke), crew stood on the superadobe/earthbag arch that was created on site with un-stabilized (aka no cement) clay-earth. People were stoked! Great gratitude is owed to Nader Khalili.
