A few days ago I received a request from my little friend Kai to "blog more." He's right, I probably should. I'm not sure what I write will meet his six-year-old expectations, but I'm writing, as he wished. Then your life will never amount to anything." But then a new friend told me to wait, and an old friend told me to be easier on myself, to give myself time. I felt I needed that permission to take a moment – to breathe, to settle – and once I received it I felt immensely better. I can hardly wait.

A few sunny images from my trip to Los Angeles in September. The ocean was so warm, we could run right into the waves. Last summer in Uncle David's pool. A lofty goal perhaps, but I really hope to achieve this in my picture making someday. I want to take photos that are beautiful, but not just artistically. I want them to carry a message, share a story or communicate an issue that needs attention. I want my photos not only to mean something, but to do. Things I've seen on the ground recently.

I should be reading more fiction. I think my mind would benefit from the escape.
