Amanda's Year in Israel

Saturday, May 2, 2009. Witnessing the observance of the Jewish holidays here in Israel has probably been one of the greatest highlights of the last ten months.  . I walked down the middle of normally very busy roads on Yom Kippur, and I saw giant chanukiot being lit on the sidewalks on Chanukah.  . I saw people of all ages wearing costumes on Purim, and I celebrated Passover, the Exodus from Egypt, in Jerusalem.  . This year, they highlighted the plight of children during the Holocaust.  . Amanda's Year in Israel

http://amandalwyearinisrael.blogspot.com/2008/09/blog-post.html

Friday, September 12, 2008. So, real classes have finally begun! The school week here goes from Sunday until Thursday, and our weekend is Friday and Saturday. I’m taking some really interesting classes! I have one class of Biblical Hebrew and about 5 classes of Modern Hebrew per week. I also have a history class and a T’filah/liturgy class. My cantorial courses include History of Jewish music, Cantillation of the Bible, Sight-Singing/Music Theory, Israeli Folk and Popular Music, and a Cantorial Workshop.

Amanda's Year in Israel: July 2008

http://amandalwyearinisrael.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 22, 2008. I'm sure you've heard about the copy-cat terrorist attack/attempt today in Jerusalem.  I'm fine and all others from my program are ok.  It was someone trying to recreate the bulldozer incident that happened just a few weeks ago.  From what I heard, the only person killed was the crazy one driving the bulldozer.  It is. So, I am fine and I have a very close group of friends in the HUC community who are all very supportive of each other.  I hope you are all doing well! 160;Jerusalem...

Friday, June 20, 2008. 160;Thank you for checking out my new blog! 160;Since I haven't left for Israel yet, I figured I would start this out by posting my application essays for those who are interested in reading them.  Feel free to let me know what you think or just say hello! 160;Thanks for reading! 160;FYI my date of departure is Monday, July 7th! Why have you chosen to apply to become a cantor? By providing music for worshippers, the cantor is providing a spiritual pathway to God. Singing with a hig...

Saturday, August 9, 2008. I've finally moved into my new apartment! 160;I hope to post pictures soon! 160;It's beautiful and so much nicer than most of the other apartments that I've seen here.  AND. we have air conditioning! 160;My roommates and I are doing quite well here.  It's actually kind of strange that I feel like I've been here for much longer than a month! 160;I guess having an everyday routine helps. 160;They were so nice and interesting! I miss you all! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Sarah's Journey Through Cantorial School. Saturday, August 23, 2008. And I know things now, many valuable things. I shall begin with an anecdote and then tell you more about my Shabbat. Oh no This is bad. If there's no power in the elevator, will it plummet to the ground? I really should have taken the stairs. This is the first time I've been trapped in the elevator.it's a shehechiyanu moment! Really, I thought that. You know you should be a Jewish educator when.). Where's my phone and who can I call?

Sarah's Journey Through Cantorial School: March 2009

http://skrevsky.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Sarah's Journey Through Cantorial School. Monday, March 30, 2009. Trip to the Negev. Last week, HUC took all of the first year students on a tiyul (trip). To the south for 4 days. We got on the bus early in the morning. During which time I, of course, fell asleep) and woke up to a barren. Landscape of beige. Initially not so incredibly thrilling, but I grew. To truly fall in love with the desert. After visiting the grave site of Ben Gurion, we met our desert guide. Short) hikes I've ever been on. Guide s...

http://skrevsky.blogspot.com/2008/12/and-look-how-far-ive-come.html

Sarah's Journey Through Cantorial School. Friday, December 12, 2008. And look how far I've come. I've just hit a little over the 5 month mark of living in Israel. How crazy! So much has changed over the past few months that it makes my head spin. I keep on imagining different workshops and adult ed. sessions on Jewish music. And it's only 5 months into this fantastic journey! The very first full day I was in Israel, I went by HUC and noticed a posting of all the cantorial concerts this year. I rememb...

Sarah's Journey Through Cantorial School: Long and overdue entry

http://skrevsky.blogspot.com/2009/02/long-and-overdue-entry.html

Sarah's Journey Through Cantorial School. Saturday, February 21, 2009. Long and overdue entry. I'm hanging my head in shame right now. I haven't written about my life in Jerusalem in such a long time that I don't even know where to begin at this point! I'll give a summary I guess of some highlights and then hopefully continue to post regularly for the rest of the year. How else will you separate Shabbat from the rest of the week? I know that in the next few days I'll think of more to tell you, but that's...

http://skrevsky.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Sarah's Journey Through Cantorial School. Tuesday, September 30, 2008. Jerusalem smells like kugel. I went for a walk yesterday around Jerusalem and realized as I walked past many of the apartment buildings that I was getting very hungry. Because I hadn't eaten yet? No Because people were cooking in preparation for Erev Rosh Hashanah and all the smells were wafting out of the building. It was a very delicious smelling walk to say the least. May this be a year of sweet blessings for you all! Here is what ...

Sarah's Journey Through Cantorial School: Happy Thanksgiving!

http://skrevsky.blogspot.com/2008/11/happy-thanksgiving.html

Sarah's Journey Through Cantorial School. Friday, November 28, 2008. I can not believe how incredibly fast the time has been flying so far this year. It literally feels like yesterday that it was scrambling for the High Holidays and taking summer ulpan. Suddenly, I know how to lead a weekday morning service, have translated from the Torah, read Haftorah, traveled to Haifa and Tzfat (yes, again), and saw a Yiddish concert! Here is an update on what has been going. Yes, we celebrated. Our class decided...

http://skrevsky.blogspot.com/2008/12/leading-monday-services-2.html

Sarah's Journey Through Cantorial School. Wednesday, December 17, 2008. Leading Monday services #2. This past Monday morning I led as the cantor for the student led Shacharit services at HUC. My partner was a rabbinical student named Rachel. We began planning this service about 6-7 weeks ago. Let me tell you, those weeks fly by fast! Another special part of the service was right before the mourners' Kaddish. Rachel had heard a poem called The Lanyard. 8211; Billy Collins. Off the blue walls of this room,.

Held by Love, Baked from scratch. N Baked with Love…. October 21, 2008. Another one of my “hop back to traditional goodies” post :P. These certainly brings back memories! Was suppose to purchase Glutinous rice flour to make more Ang Koo Kueh, but by mistake, Mummy bought 2 packets of Rice Flour! Since i have 2 packets on hand to play with, i started to hunt and for recipes, and spotted this on Chow Times. 1st thought “Must make! 2nd thought “Must eat them with that orange-colored sugar”. Thursday, September 27, 2012.
