Learning journey for OCA Textiles. Running with scissors …. September 30, 2014. September 30, 2014. Amanda J. Wells. What a great workshop, timely too as I needed to get to grips with a new machine and also to try free machining, also for the first time. The workshop was held in the Millennium gallery creative space, clean and airy, with Emma from running with scissors. The instructions were clear and understandable, the range of materials wide and variable and the on hand help was exceptional. I initial...

Learning journey for OCA Textiles. FibreFusion at Rufford Craft Centre. August 27, 2014. Amanda J. Wells. I can’t recommend this exhibition highly enough. As always this contemporary textile group have produced an excellent range of items. Although I have scanned the info about looking closely at 2 or 3 pieces and analysing them, I was overawed and just wandered about for an hour of sheer pleasure. There is also a large collection of sketchbooks on the structure theme and these were a revelation! Amanda,...

Learning journey for OCA Textiles. November 20, 2014. Amanda J. Wells. Contrast is the perceived colour differences when they are in close proximity to each other. This is a subjective understanding as we all see colour differently. It is often split into 2 main areas; Value. Dark areas advance or stand out whilst light areas recede or hang back – high contrast colours of dark and light look dramatic. Colour. Johannes Itten proposed a further 7 combinations;. The pure colour (hue). The contrast of quality.

ACA part 5 Portrait review 4.11.14. Somewhat though I now see more ways I could work a tapestry portrait, which also excites me. The overall question I have about the piece is; the added relief of the couching and stitching, has it taken the weaving from fine art to folk art? I do feel I would not use this on a portrait as I do like the texture and look of the simplified image. My next portrait will be more restrained in its applications. If not, what changes would you make? Part 5 a piece of your own.

Spending so much time having a very quiet life has woken up the creativity in me again. When you are not bombarded with stimulation f...

Grayson Perry’s Who are You? Channel 4 (part 1). Grayson Perry’s Who are you? Channel 4 20.00pm, 22nd October 2014. It was obvious that this was a programme I should watch. Perry looking at creating portraits, not only introduces an artist and his preparation in order to create a portrait is enough, yet there also belies the insight it revealed into my interest in portraiture. This programme looked at Fame, Religion, Power and gender. To be an artist who produced portraits you had to be “. I was moved by...
