US Film History After 1950. Laquo; Last House on the Left. McCabe and Mrs. Miller. March 20, 2012. However, and this is the real tear-jerker of the film, it doesn’t work out. McCabe cannot step outside his lone gunman role, and Mrs. Miller is forced to stay as a one-dimensional version of femininity. Was the Coen brothers’ attempt to make a film that had no social/political agenda…focusing instead on speaking truths about human nature and The Way Things Are. Is that part of indie style nowadays? Maybe that’s why a lot of “indie” films suck so bad.
