Amazing Grace Dairy: May 2013
http://amazinggracedairy.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Sunday, May 26, 2013. This will be short. Breeding season has begun for our herd of cows. I started artificially inseminating them on Monday the 20th. So far we have bred 46 cows. I am insane for staying up this late. It is midnight and I have to get up in about five hours to continue breeding the cows. Monday, May 13, 2013. With only one cow left to calve, I will post our calving season statistics. We freshened 175 cows thus far. We are milking 169 cows. Our calving season began February 21, 2013. Start...

Tuesday, November 20, 2012. November 2012 Cows for Sale - SOLD (for the most part). We are asking $850 an animal. We will not sell cows to those who have no experience milking and caring for cattle. For the most up to date list of what cows are currently available please check here. 1 is a first lactation heifer. She was born on 2/8/2010. Her sire is a Finnish Ayrshire Piuha and her maternal grand sire is New Zealand Ayrshire Blaze. She milks out of all four quarters. 20 is a first lactation heifer born ...
Amazing Grace Dairy: Our Dairy
http://amazinggracedairy.blogspot.com/p/our-dairy.html
Our first animals on the farm were our 12 heifers that were born in the spring of 2009. They were about 5 months old when we brought them here. Our first animals to arrive on the farm! Our cows when they first set foot on the farm. One cold day in January. My father-in-law used to have 100% registered Ayrshire herd, that was started by his father, I think. This is where the strong Ayrshire influence comes from. We now milk his cows and he raises our heifers once they are weaned. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
Amazing Grace Dairy: October 2012

Tuesday, October 9, 2012. A Farmer's Perspective on Looking For a Farm to Buy Milk. I recently read a post. Now what I would look for if I had to find a farmer to buy milk from is this: 1. like you said, grass fed cows. 2 I wouldn't be against buying milk from a farm who fed their cows some grain provided it is non-GMO and it is not a large part of their diet. Ask to look at the milking units. Can you see lots of dried manure on them? How often is it cleaned? How often does he test for it? And just to ad...
Amazing Grace Dairy: September 2012

Wednesday, September 26, 2012. Conception Rates for Different Breeds. In PC Dart (our computer program) we have our cows separated out into different groups based on their breeds. I will admit that some bull bred cows and many of our purchased cows were guesses based on what they looked like and what group of bulls we knew to be running with the cows at that time, but for the most part I feel that I am fairly accurate. Okay, so back to group #1 - the Ayrshires. With our first service conception rate bein...

Oats mix | Dairy Grazing
https://padairygrazing.wordpress.com/2012/10/11/oats-mix
From green grass to green pockets! October 15th 2012 →. October 11, 2012. This fall I decided to plant an oat mixture in my new pasture that was in corn during summer. I had planned on planting Oats, Triticale, and Marshal Ryegrass together. I had also ordered some grazing turnips and groundhog radishes which I decided to plant in with the mix. Planted in early September, it has grown well and is 14 inches tall. My daughter assists me on the measuring. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. I am current...
Annuals versus Perennials | Dairy Grazing
https://padairygrazing.wordpress.com/2013/09/23/annuals-versus-perennials
From green grass to green pockets! Fall update →. September 23, 2013. I was running low on pasture in June, right now I am low on pasture and have the cows at 8lbs DMof pasture (down from 18lbs DM). Too many of my acres are currently tied up in establishing annuals. So why even plant summer and fall annuals? The pics below are from the same field and are almost the same view. Sudan grass in summer is now sown into oats. And 5lbs Tokapo Orchardgrass. Doubtful, but who knows! Fall update →. However the lac...
2013 Fall Crops | Dairy Grazing
https://padairygrazing.wordpress.com/2013/09/17/2013-fall-crops
From green grass to green pockets! Annuals versus Perennials →. September 17, 2013. Once again it’s time for fall crops for both mechanical harvesting for storage and for grazing. Cooler than normal summer weather didn’t give maximum sudan grass growth, but it really helped the perennial ryegrass pastures. So, I burned down sudan grass in early August, spread manure and planted the paddock that had last years Oats Mix. Which was planted with 70lbs/ac of Triticale, 30lbs/ac of Annual Ryegrass, and 5lbs/ac...
2013 Grazing: The end | Dairy Grazing
https://padairygrazing.wordpress.com/2013/12/07/2013-grazing-the-end
From green grass to green pockets! 2013: The numbers →. 2013 Grazing: The end. December 7, 2013. We also changed the feed given to the breeding heifer group which stopped getting grass just before the cows did. The pregnant heifer/dry cow group had their grass intake reduced around that time but are still getting a little grass intake as they clean off the oats. I’ll add some soybean meal to their ration in the next few days. This entry was posted in General. 2013: The numbers →. 2013 Grazing: The end.

From green grass to green pockets! May 6th, Heifers. June 10, 2013. Thanks to Google I now have another overhead photo of the farm which shows some changes and grazing management. I pinpointed the photo to April 23rd or 24th because of where the cows are located and what my journal says. This entry was posted in General. May 6th, Heifers. July 5, 2013 at 11:20 am. From green grass to green pockets! 2013 Grazing: The end →. October 19, 2013. The last three pics show the regrowth of the oats, all pics were taken the same day but from different spots in the paddock. 1 day post grazing. 3 days post grazing. 7 days post grazing. This entry was posted in General. 2013 Grazing: The end →. October 19, 2013 at 12:25 pm. Would you be better moving the tumble wheel more often but less each time to encourage the cows to eat right down? October 19, 2013 at 12:51 pm. In the Uk ...

From green grass to green pockets! Author Archives: Matt Bomgardner. Incorporating grazing into the modern family dairy. February 13, 2017. The following is an article I wrote for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s 2016 fall newsletter. Today’s dairy economy has become extremely volatile. For the modern family dairy, some believe the only option is get bigger or get out . I, however, … Continue reading →. Winter will end….I hope. March 1, 2014. The good, the bad and the ugly. Spring plans | Dairy Grazing

From green grass to green pockets! Finally out to Pasture! March 2, 2013. Program. I then drew lines for each lane and road, and I outlined each field, paddock and woodline. I then deleted the image and the lines I drew were left. For fear of the map looking like bunch of lines, I then snipped the design and pasted it onto the paint program where I shaded everything that was not a paddock or field. This map will also help me direct my custom manure haulers when they empty my pit. Have barley in 3/4 and I...

Tuesday, October 20, 2015. Changes in the Way We Raised Calves in 2015. This year has been a year of changes. We decided to raise the calves on the cows this year. The calves did wonderfully. We only had to treat two of them for any respiratory issues, and even then, it was a one time thing. The cows.well, the cows were stressed. "Where is my baby? You come back here! Don't go running off! About two weeks after we weaned them, we noticed that the cows and calves were both calmer. The cows started to ...
