Gathering Threads – Tutorial: Blocking Smocked Yokes with Freezer Paper | Smocking, Sewing and Creative Musings
http://www.clairemeldrum.ca/tutorial-blocking-smocked-yokes-with-freezer-paper
Tutorial: Blocking Smocked Yokes with Freezer Paper. On Jun 15 2011, in Smocking. The moment that always scares me when I’m making a smocked dress always comes when I’ve got to cut away my smocking for the armholes. Typically, the instructions say something like. “Block smocking. Trace armholes using pattern guide. Zig-zag inside the tracing. Cut.”. Sounds easy enough. How hard can it be? Adheres to the fabric, making it stiff and easy to handle. You get where I’m going with this? Smocking board or other...
Gathering Threads – A Quick Vintage-Style Quilt | Smocking, Sewing and Creative Musings
http://www.clairemeldrum.ca/a-quick-vintage-style-quilt
A Quick Vintage-Style Quilt. On Jan 22 2014, in Quilting. So, my sewing goal for 2014 is to eliminate all of my UFOs. No Really. Stop laughing. I’m serious! I am hereby announcing that I intend to finish all of the UFOs currently lurking in my stash and in my sewing room before the end of 2014. I already finished up Shiny Brite. Came from. Happily, this quilt’s instructions were actually accurate and it went together in almost no time at all. That was posted on the F&P website. The variation, called Aunt...

Amberlane & Amberpetites Updates: April 2014
http://amberlanemarquis.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, April 13, 2014. The tiniest antique bonnet! I've been working so very hard on a new pattern that I've neglected. Sorry So today I dove into my drawer of antique bonnets and found this tiny gem. If you look carefully you will see the hand-stitched perfectly spaced pin tucks. Such fine detail! The laces insertions have been whipped to the fabric and the hand-embroidered floral insertion. Can you imagine making that embroidered insertion? Stitching - the only machine work I could find. And lastly he...
Amberlane & Amberpetites Updates: What more can you do with a Ruler?
http://amberlanemarquis.blogspot.com/2015/04/what-more-can-you-do-with-ruler.html
Saturday, April 18, 2015. What more can you do with a Ruler? Back in the days when I was learning about pattern making and drafting we used a transparent flexible ruler with red lines forming a grid of eight inch increments. They have become my favourite type of ruler and are much more accurate than the thick and ridged quilting rulers. I love the little 6” ruler for small jobs and drafting doll patterns where the 18” or even the 12“ might seem too big. Done and centre is marked. Add ¼” SA. Add seam allo...
Amberlane & Amberpetites Updates: July 2014
http://amberlanemarquis.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, July 24, 2014. Sunbonnet - Take II. So here goes a second run at this sunbonnet hat. This time I decided to make the pattern crown in the original size and skip the lining. Instead of lining the crown I made it up with French seams. In this technique the first seam is sewn with wrong sides together and normally trimmed down, flipped so right sides are together and then the final row of stitching. Using my quilting foot, first row of stitching at 1/8". Total seam allowance was. There was so much...
Amberlane & Amberpetites Updates: September 2014
http://amberlanemarquis.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, September 28, 2014. A Basic Smocked Yoke Variation. Once you have mastered the Basic Smocked Yoke Dress you might want to try making a variation - just to keep things interesting. You don't need a new pattern, just a little courage to change things up a bit. Add a box pleat to a piped yoke garment. Inserting a box pleat in the centre front of the skirt is a fairly simple thing to do and cuts down on the amount of smocking you will have to do. You can do this with almost any basic pattern. Refold ...
Amberlane & Amberpetites Updates: T’was the night before Christmas….
http://amberlanemarquis.blogspot.com/2014/12/twas-night-before-christmas.html
Tuesday, December 23, 2014. T’was the night before Christmas…. 8220;Silent Mice©” is a smocking design plate by Little Memories. A wonderful company that creates the cutest smocking plates. This has been one of my favourite Christmas designs since I first saw it way back in the 80’s! When I saw it first I decided that I was not going to all that work to have a child outgrow the outfit I had smocked. So I smocked the design on a Christmas ball. I wanted something special for the end of the Santa hat.
Amberlane & Amberpetites Updates: A different approach to "Little Breeze"
http://amberlanemarquis.blogspot.com/2015/01/a-different-approch-to-little-breeze.html
Thursday, January 15, 2015. A different approach to "Little Breeze". A wonderfully creative lady wrote to me a couple of months ago from Las Vegas about making up my pattern, “Little Breeze”. Most people make this little dress in cotton. What a difference to find someone making it in a challenging fabric like taffeta! She planned to use the most sophisticated aubergine shot taffeta. She wanted to extend the fold back facing (2” in the pattern) to include the full area to be smocked. I can see this as an ...
Amberlane & Amberpetites Updates: August 2014
http://amberlanemarquis.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, August 26, 2014. Round up before fall. I've been putting the final touches to the new pattern now named. Lullaby, An Infant Sleep Sacque. And it is off to the printer's this morning for a test run. If all goes well then it should be ready within a week! This is always the scary part because there is always a difference between computers and sometimes things don't come out just as one wants! When this happens it is back to the keypad and tweaking. And here it is! Couldn't let it go without a matt...

Just another WordPress.com site. August 5, 2011. I have copied and pasted my literacy journey here. I have added to it in bold. Hey there, my name is Amber Smith. I am so thrilled about expanding my knowledge of technology and reading and how to incorporate both into all subject areas. This was successfully accomplished. There were so many ideas within the book! Along these same lines, I was also engrossed with the idea of writing and controlling what happens in books. In sixth grade I read, The Neve...

Monday, August 1, 2011. Kitchen/Dining Room Spruce up. Part 1. So he wanted to have this be a big surprise, which means I've been having to hold it in. Do you know how hard that's been? It all started out when we were eating dinner at the table, and we had just finished watching HGTV. The dining room/kitchen had always felt a bit lackluster. Case In. Point. I felt like we were stuck in a constant "autumn" state, and always thought to myself "come one D, we can do much better than this". But what Mr. ...
