Meet Fifi Pumpkin | Kiss My Grits!

Notes from an Outraged Hen. Ambling On, as an Ovo-Pescaterian. Mama Cow →. October 27, 2011. 8220;Fifi Pumpkin Schmitt Rice” fell off a slaughter truck on a busy highway in Nashville earlier this week. Luckily, Fifi had an angel that day in Kelley Schmitt, who shared with our Savannah Backyard Chickens group this tale of survival and compassion. She is doing great and walks around the back yard and sits by my dog Riley in the sun. This is an organization working hard to improve the quality of life for bi...
Mama Cow | Kiss My Grits!

Notes from an Outraged Hen. October 30, 2011. In February of this year, we saw a frantic Mama Cow, with her baby lying on the ground. She kept running back and forth, clearly distraught (with the placenta still yet to be delivered). Sandor wanted to document the moment, and caught these images of shared angst. They responded to the Mama’s running to and fro, by encircling the calf, in a demonstration of protection and concern. Or visit their site directly. Thanks for stopping by! Enter your comment here.

Notes from an Outraged Hen. Last Ambles of Summer. Meet Fifi Pumpkin →. Ambling On, as an Ovo-Pescaterian. September 28, 2011. A representative of Farm Sanctuary has asked me, in the most eloquent and gracious way possible, not to use their materials for the upcoming “Hen Happening” on Food Day in Savannah. Gave me a visual I won’t soon forget of what happens to these downy chick babies at big hatcheries. For now, the answer is yes. It’s good to get clear that I’m not a vegetarian or a vegan. Someone who...

Notes from an Outraged Hen. A Visit to Connemara Farms, Flat Rock, NC. Ambling On, as an Ovo-Pescaterian →. Last Ambles of Summer. September 20, 2011. These last days of summer and I’m still here. Walking the same rural road with the same donkeys, horses and cows to look at. Not ambling through medieval Spanish villages and staying in monastery-like refugios with my friend Sarah on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. We have a new hen, a strange bird called Henriella. She’s a Japanese Saipan,...At the ...

When a Baby Chameleon Looks at You. One of my Favorite Things in Spring. Talk about being in Sync with nature. August Zinnias and Okra. I planted these Zinnias late, after the Spring rains, but they finally are in full bloom. That's the aviary in the background. The Okra is the last thing we'll harvest this Summer, and is the Red Variety. AN UNEXPECTED GARDEN GUEST. This whimsical creature visited the garden recently - it's a Spiny Softshell. Hope you all are staying cool! Two Mama Hens Raising Six.

With Charlotte Mason and Ambleside Online. Charlotte Mason Blog Carnival. Monday, December 26, 2011. Many birds come into view the more freely in the cold weather that they are driven forth in search of food. The cattle mourn in corners where the fence screens them. The sun, with ruddy orb. Ascending, fires the horizon. Every herb and every spiry blade. Stretches a length of shadow o'er the field. The sparrows peep, and quit the sheltering eaves. The redbreast warbles still, but is content. Vol 1 pg 86.

Strolling through the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, looking at birds and other interesting things and writing about them. Now with Extremely Local Haiku! EBird: Keep track of the birds you see, with maps! Audubon: What else is there to say? The Cornell Lab of Ornithology: Lots of science and also nestcams! Birdcast: Like a weather forecast for migrating birds. Why am I here? Mount Tom from Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary. A gravestone from 1777. Indoors, I love really strong tea (PG Tips! You are c...
