About this site and the author. This site is meant to be a reference to help provide information on the identity, biostratigraphy and location of fossil cephalopods found in the state of Utah. All fossils shown on this site were collected, or photographed in the field, by the author. They were all found on public land, administered by either the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) or the United States Forest Service (USFS). Or land formerly administered by the BLM that is now property of the State of Utah.
Asbian Cephalopods

Asbian (Late Mississippian) Ammonoids. During the Mississippian rocks of the Chainman Shale. Were deposited in the Antler Foreland Basin. Fossil cephalopods are very common in these rocks in west-central Utah and eastern Nevada. Asbian age members of the Chainman Shale include the Skunk Spring Limestone Bed. And the lowest beds of the Camp Canyon Member. The fossil cephalopods shown below are from these rocks in the Confusion Range of Millard and Juab Counties. See Camp Canyon here. Korn and Titus 2011 .

The following lists are of all fossil cephalopods I know of in Utah's rocks. This is probably not. Biostratigraphic, with taxa arranged by system, series, stage, biozone and formation. The list of references is a mixture of Utah cephalopod references and some used for identification purposes. A study or collection of data on the mass accumulation of ammonoid fossils in the Early Triassic Thaynes Formation in the Confusion Range, Millard County, West-Central Utah. Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Along the lines of reverting to aquatic dinosaurs as has been seen in the geoblogosphere. Of late, I give you Duria Antiquior (above), and it's lithographic byproduct (below). Floating on the surface of the water are ammonites with wings (or sails as conjectured some). Clearly showing that ammonites could fly. A lot of science has been done since the art above was first seen. Back then about the only creature known to compare the ammonites to was the Argonaut. Sunday, May 17, 2015. The Permian-Triassic boundary in central and southern Utah is marked with Conglomerates. Some are probably Permian, those deep in paleo channels, and some are earliest Triassic, those mixed in with the sand and silt at the base of the Black Dragon Formation red beds. Monday, May 31, 2010. It was the warmest day of the long weekend for our hike up Little Black Mountain. Hike description is here. My first big hike of 2010. We were hoping for blue skies, but it became increasingly overcast. As a weak front moved through the valley. Nonetheless, the route along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, north of Avenues Twin Peaks and to the foot of Little Black was pleasant - full of wildflowers. Then the real ascent began. About 1,200 feet in about 0.75 miles! And a horned lizard.

Thursday, April 3, 2014. Types on loan from USNM to NHMU. After a request to the US National Museum, they sent the first of three loans of Type Specimens to the Natural History Museum of Utah. Types are the specimens used to compare to other specimens to verify the others are typical of the type. Syntypes are usually from a series of types where neither a Holotype or Lectotype have been designated. Syntype of Wyomingites aplanatus. Holotype for Danubites strongi. Hyatt and Smith 1905. Monday, July 9, 2012. Tozer, 1994, in his monograph of Canadian Triassic Ammonoids, discussed the differences between Population Taxonomy and Typological Taxonomy and admitted that his classification, especially of the Prionitidae, was arbitrary, and to use a strictly typological taxonomy would mean almost every specimen was a seperate species.
