Amphibious Attack Banana

Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Random Bullets of OH HAWAII. Lesson learned: smoked ahi spread is magical but I cannot be trusted around it. In my defense, an 8oz container of it is only one serving and 250 calories. That said, the entire box of nut crackers I was using as a vehicle for the ahi spread? Probably not so healthy. Yeah, no too bad. Playing in the building pool or swimming around in the protected part of Waikiki? Come on, nobody could hate that. Mangos and spicy poke? Catch a bus to anywhere ever...

Amphibious Attack Banana: Mid-July Madness, Part I

http://www.amphibiousattackbanana.blogspot.com/2015/07/mid-july-madness-part-i.html

Friday, July 24, 2015. Mid-July Madness, Part I. Street sign from Seattle. Best euphemism I've seen for "detour", and also a fairly apropos opening image for our past couple weeks. So, I'll cover the serious part first: I had a perfectly pleasant flight over, but when we hit the ground I had a text message from my mom asking me to call her as soon as I landed. I knew what it was right away: my Uncle Gene had passed away early that morning. I've heard so much about you, Gene talked about you all the time!

Amphibious Attack Banana: oh hawaii, episode 43278975

http://www.amphibiousattackbanana.blogspot.com/2015/08/oh-hawaii-episode-43278975.html

Wednesday, August 05, 2015. More signs you might be back in Hawaii:. The bone-deep knowledge that you will simply never ever be completely dry again until you leave the state. SAND EVERYWHERE. THE SAND. And you haven't even been to the beach yet. Absolute 100% lack of spatial awareness, the presence of others, and any urge whatsoever to accomplish anything in a timely fashion from 95% of your fellow pedestrians/store patrons/drivers/human beings. Fridge. Instant rice? This This is why. Then checked into ...

Amphibious Attack Banana: February 2015

http://www.amphibiousattackbanana.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 12, 2015. Where we're at right now. Three interviews down, two to go. I got in from #3 yesterday evening and am home until early Monday morning. First three all went well, the last two are my two top choices. I'm feeling very ready, and this is basically all I'm spending mental energy on for the next couple weeks. It may sound weird, but I'm actually looking forward to it. I'm ready. w00t. I keep hoping that we will eventually look back on this ridiculous crazy-fest of a time period an...

Amphibious Attack Banana: April 2015

http://www.amphibiousattackbanana.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 30, 2015. I'll do some actual trip posts soon, I promise. I'm grabbing the photos from my and Dave's phones now. However, I've discovered a phenomenon after our last couple overseas trips that requires a blog report. I'll call it The Burger Point. Specifically, it's the point in any international trip at which I become unhinged over the cuisine monotony and suddenly, inexplicably, violently want a hamburger. I inevitably get 10-14 days into " tiny pastries, pasta, and more pasta. Crab leg...

Amphibious Attack Banana: March 2015

http://www.amphibiousattackbanana.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 30, 2015. The Girl and Doll, Part II. If you missed Part I read it here. When we last left Ariel/"The Gril", the protagonist of my written-and-illustrated-at-age-six novel, she and her doll were off to deliver themselves to the family who had requested a couple of trusting children through their church. Seems legit. Just as a reminder, here's how our main characters are looking at this point:. She makes it to the house (which DID have a chimney and smoke! The highlight here isn't the art (c...

rubinc at large: August 2014

http://rubincatlarge.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 21, 2014. Since we live downtown, and specifically in the Gayborhood, we often leave our apartment to discover unexpected parties - an arts festival or gay pride parade or something else fun happening on our street. Today, though, we went outside after dinner to go to the convenience store, and encountered this:. We googled it when we got home, apparently it's called Diner en Blanc. Sunday, August 17, 2014. The photo doesn't really convey how golden and sparkly it is. How do they do that?

Monday, March 30, 2015. As I mentioned, our staycation last week was hampered by the fact that we both got sick and ended up spending a lot more time on the couch watching TV than out exploring various Philly neighborhoods. We still did venture out a little bit, though - most notably to see Bob's Burgers Live. It wrapped up with some audience Q&A, and someone used the opportunity to propose to his girlfriend, so that was sweet. Wednesday, March 25, 2015. Ben and I have the week off (yay! And I stumbled a...

Sunday, May 31, 2015. Yesterday was wedding number three of the season! Here's the corresponding sampler:. I really liked how the first wedding sampler I made this year. Monday, May 25, 2015. The whole thing is only 4 inches in diameter. Now I have a new tool in my needlepoint toolbelt, yay! Sunday, May 10, 2015. Doing Things: Putting my money where my mouth is. So today I'm going to focus on what I'm trying to do with my money. What I've been doing so far:. I set aside a certain percentage of my paychec...

rubinc at large: November 2014

http://rubincatlarge.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 12, 2014. Remember when I randomly won that story slam. Well, the "grand slam" of all the individual slam winners from the year was last week. I thought it would be at another small venue, but it was actually at a giant theater and pretty intimidating. The theme was "thanks a lot"and my story was not as dramatic as the last one:. I'm not sure what place I got because they only announced the winner, but I didn't crash and burn so I'm happy. You can see all the contestants here.

rubinc at large: January 2015

http://rubincatlarge.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 25, 2015. I love orchids, but I've never been able to get one to re-bloom after the initial flowers fall off. I usually keep watering them for a few months until I give up and buy a replacement. But yesterday, for the first time ever, I went to water my latest all-leaves-no-flowers orchid and saw that it has sprouted a new shoot with buds on it! Look at all those buds! Thursday, January 22, 2015. So, today's theme is learning things - history edition! And "only if you consider people in y...

rubinc at large: Road Trip: Driving through NM and AZ

http://rubincatlarge.blogspot.com/2015/07/road-trip-driving-through-nm-and-az.html

Sunday, July 5, 2015. Road Trip: Driving through NM and AZ. I know I've been posting only about our destinations so far, but today's drive from Gallup to Phoenix was so beautiful we had to take pictures. Instead of going the direct way on the main interstate highway, we took a slightly less direct route that went through the Pueblo of Zuni in New Mexico, the Fort Apache Reservation in Arizona, the Tonto National Forest, and lots of gorgeous scenery in between. But no photos are allowed without a permit.

rubinc at large: October 2014

http://rubincatlarge.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 31, 2014. I just finished the 3 consecutive weeks of travel part of my fall, and am embarrassingly excited to sit at home and do as little as possible for the next few weeks. When I travel for work I am mostly working the whole time I'm in whatever place, but I did manage to squeeze in a little bit of non-work over the past few weeks. The night before my St. Louis conference began, I went with some work friends to Lambert's Cafe. Yes, that is the "small" drink size. Pumpple is the infamou...

Friday, December 26, 2014. We've reached the elementary school layers of the great closet excavation:. My favorite part is the spitting sound effect. Not sure if funny or sad. Thursday, December 25, 2014. Every speckle is colored in a different color, and outlined in pen - front and back, and even the sides are colored in rainbow. The inside is much the same:. The actual contents are page after page of meticulous notes, complete with color-coded section headers:. This is pretty easy stuff, right? You don...

rubinc at large: Road Trip: Gallup

http://rubincatlarge.blogspot.com/2015/07/road-trip-gallup.html

Saturday, July 4, 2015. The drive from Austin to Gallup took most of Friday, but at our Gallup friend's recommendation we stopped in Albuquerque for dinner at El Pinto. We thought it was just a good restaurant she liked, but upon arriving we realized it's actually a giant old hacienda/garden complex that is a Big Deal. Inside they had pictures of all kinds of celebrities, politicians, and presidents that had eaten there. The food was excellent:. Those sopapillas, though. Wow. For straight, white, cis, ab...
